SCAD Fashion

I'm in my second year at a tiny liberal arts, Great Books school. I came here not really knowing what I wanted to do in the future, and I eventually settled on clinical psychology. After two years here my interests have expanded greatly. I've been sewing most of my life, but fashion design always seemed too ridiculous. Now that my future is looming it's something I really want to pursue. I am interested in SCAD because of the location (close to family I'm currently very far from, small town by my standards, warm!, near ocean) and curriculum. Many other posters have complained about the lack of electives and liberal arts requirements. For me that's a huge plus, since I've done nothing but those things for the past two years. I also actively read and study humanities and social sciences on my own, so I'm really looking to go to school for something that is much more difficult to learn on my own.

Can anyone give me general opinions of the program?
Other places to consider (besides Pratt, Parsons, and FIT)?
Experiences of other transfer students?
Do students come into the program with a lot, little, or no experience with design and/or sewing?

Thanks

The school overall has great industry connections and especially within the fashion department there is a great connection to the fashion industry. Every year they host a fashion show with designers like Marc Jacobs, Vera Wang, Tom Ford and others having attended in the past. The editor of Vogue, Andre Leon Talley, is on the Board of Trustees and is very active with the fashion department. They also started up a program called StyleLab for the students working on their senior collections where designers work with a group of student several times through the year critiquing and providing guidance for their senior collections.

Some thoughts about SCAD from an insider. There is no Chairperson - nobody wants the job. The Dean is new and inexperienced in education and design - clueless. There is difficulty keeping profs. 3 good ones left this past year and haven’t been replaced. Aside from the flashy visitors, the connections to NY are not what they are at FIT / Parsons and Pratt. The placement person is useless. Half the profs are excellent and the rest going thru the motions - of the remaining ones - all have no current connection to the fashion world. You are on your own getting an internship. Job placement figures they quote are a lie. Because of the open admissions - classes are dragged down by the less talented and lazy…

LALondonNY - you copy/pasted the s.a.m.e. response in almost ten separate threads today, even resurrecting some “dead ones” about SCAD. It seems you are on a mission or have some vendetta? What’s up with that? And how are you truly an insider if you left?

I agree with RainingAgain. LALondonNY, your vitriolic post has no place here. Clearly you’ve got an axe to grind. People come here to be informed, not to indulge your need for negativity. Get lost.

This is the perfect place to inform. And RainingAgain is a shill for SCAD.

Every now and then, a student or faculty member from the early to mid-1990s will resurrect issues they had with the college over 15 years ago.

At the time the school had significant problems. It was NOT a good time for anyone - the students, the faculty, and the Rowans/Poetters - from 1992 to 1996. ALL three groups acted maliciously and/or irresponsibly toward the others. People were hurt personally, and professionally. In all likelihood, LALondonNY is from this period, and may have been adversely affected.

If anyone wants to read a scathing article about these years, just Google “lingua franca scad”, and read “Sinister Designs”. The article paints a brutal and one-sided picture, but it does provide an account of the turmoil in which the college was immersed. I arrived in Savannah in 1994 and experienced the tail end.

LALondonNY, calls me a shill, yet I have no reason to be one. I saw much of what happened (15+ years ago), my butt was fired from the college as a faculty member, and because of a standard clause in the separation agreement, I cannot step foot on SCAD property or attend a SCAD function nor get an alumni card. I’m a little hurt by that, but I refuse to be bitter because so many very very very good things happened for me while I was there.

The past is the past. It is not the present nor the future, yet some people cannot disconnect the past from the present. It’s a shame.

Rainingagain and LALondon, I have recommended to the moderator that your vitriolic and counterproductive posts be stripped from this forum.

I want you both to know that I will NOT be suggesting to my daughter that she look at this forum as a source of useful information for fear that she’ll be scared off by your little war. Thanks a ton.

Suits me just fine. LALondonNY came here only out of spite and anger with malicious intent.
