SCAD in general

Regarding ID (interior design), Kansas State has the number one program in the country. Its really a good bargain and set in a great little town on the prairie. Very very safe. When you go out there it feels like you have really been somewhere different (in a good way). The town was rated high regarding a great place to retire. My son went to KSU and had a great college experience. Go see it.

Regarding KCAI, its located in a nice area of Kansas City (The Plaza) set between the Nelson-Atkins Museum, Modern Art Museum and the University of Mo, Kansas City. The campus is small but really cute. The Arts community is vibrant. I just talked to a student yesterday who graduated couple of years ago and she really enjoyed her time there and felt like she had a very good educational experience. Regarding the specifics of the film department, I don't know.

My twin sister is going to SCAD for their professional writing program in September. I was just really curious as to what people think about the program, if any one actually knows anything, I mean I know the school primarily focuses on art and design. We’re both writers actually, I’m going to a state school in a traditional English program but she insists that she is more interested in professional writing at SCAD because of the emphasis on career oriented courses instead of more of an emphasis on literature like at most universities. Also she likes the art background because she almost did graphic design. Honestly, I think she’s kind of crazy to go to an art school for writing but I’m hardly an authority on the subject! But to satiate my curiosity, is the program respected at all? Do people find it beneficial over the less career oriented BA’s you get at state schools?

My daughter has become a Creative Writing major, and is liking it a lot. Her current goal is to become a screenwriter for TV, and she thought the beginning screenwriting class was very good. If your sister wants to go into writing novels, then SCAD might not be the best choice. A well-respected English lit program at a university might be a better fit, pluys probably cheaper.

All students have to do a drawing class and and a 2-D design class in their freshman year, so your sister might find herself sucked into the art world at SCAD!

Hi all, this is my first post, so bare with me haha.

I am planning on applying to a few colleges for 2D (not 3D) animation for Fall 2010. Here are my choices:

CalArts --toughest school to get into, but I am going to try hard to get in.

School of Visual Arts (SVA) --they have a great reputation, but I hear different things from different people. Anyone know or went to here?

SCAD --I’ve heard many good things and bad things about SCAD, but I have a friend who goes there and she’s loving it. I have a feeling it’s a great school, but I don’t know if it is for 2D Animation.

University of the Arts (UArts) --I live close to UArts and I did their PreCollege program, and I really like it, but it’s not one of the better schools for animation.

Any suggestions, tips, advice would be greatly appreciated! =D

Ok i have been wanting to go to SCAD since i was in 7th grade. Then i didnt know what i wanted to major in but now i do. I am a senior and i am worried about the cost of colleges more than anything. I have my heart set on SCAD but looked at the tuition fees and they are way out of my range. So i was wondering how do people afford that! Also i want to major in interior design and want more info on other peoples experience at SCAD.

SCAD does good discounts for students who got good SAT scores and GPA in high school. My daughter is getting $15K off the tuition per year --provided she keeps a 3.0 GPA at SCAD.

I can’t speak to the interior design department, but she is liking her classes in writing, art history, and film making.

thanks a lot. i didnt know that they did that, so that is great to know. now i definately consider going there again.I just wasnt sure if would have been able to afford it but luckily now i do if i keep my grades up. thanks, you helped a lot! =0)

You are welcome – good luck!

My daughter also received a renewable academic award that is making it easier to afford the school.

She really LOVES being there and has had a great first quarter experience. She’s really enjoying the Savannah location and loves being immersed back in art classes (she ran out of art classes in High School by her Junior year!). When we took her down for move-in and freshman orientation, both my husband and I were impressed with the steps the school takes to ease the transition from home to college.

Despite the price tag, we are very confident that she made the right choice and in the end will be well-prepared for a career upon graduation.

Hi, I have a BS degree in Graphic design from a foreign university. I’m planning to join the Online MA in graphic design program in SCAD. I have some questions. Please help me …

If this online MA degree is equivalent to MA/MFA degree(on campus) from any other art
university of USA?

I’m not familiar with US degree programs . Could you please let me know, what does it
mean by 30 hour program. How long will it take to finish this program in SCAD?
(1 year or 2 years)

How many classes will be there in the full MA Degree program?

What will be the total cost for the Online MA degree in Graphic Design (full time)?

How is the job market for the Scad students? Do the big companies accept Scad degree?

Is there any scholarship program for the foreign online students?

Thanks in advance for
Moonmita

I’m sorry, but I don’t have any answers for your questions. They are very good questions, and all things you should know about before you get started with the Online MA program. The admissions officer should be able to answer most of these questions for you. As for big companies accepting the SCAD degree, my understanding is that graphic design job acceptances are really portfolio based. Companies don’t care so much about where your degree is from, but how good your work is. Good luck!

Some thoughts about the SCAD Fashion Department from an insider circa 2010. There is no Chairperson - nobody wants the job. The Dean is new and inexperienced in education and design - clueless. There is difficulty keeping profs. 3 good ones left this past year and haven’t been replaced.
Aside from the flashy visitors, the connections to NYC are zero. Not what they are at FIT / Parsons and Pratt - . The placement person is useless. Half the profs are excellent and the rest going thru the motions - of the remaining ones - all have no current connection to the fashion world. Half have their Masters degrees from SCAD. You are on your own getting an internship. Job placement figures they quote are a lie. Because of the open admissions - classes are dragged down by the less talented and lazy… The most recent collaboration with Malandrino and Posen was a disaster.

Warning - SCAD has shills on this site posing as individuals. Buyer beware.

Well, if you won’t respond to my PM, whatever. I was courteous enough to identify myself in real life, you have not extended the same courtesy in return.

People can read my comments, and they can read yours. I’m sure they can decide for themselves which of us is credible.

It’s good to see this thread is still alive XD… i just got done reading ALL of the comments… ive lost ALOT of sleep, but i think it was worth it. this thread has made me want to attend SCAD even more then i did at first. SCAD visited my city and i attended i also got a portfolio review, which was very helpful. i was worried about my skills as a artist…( self-esteem issues XD ) but the lady who looked over my work was impressed in my work and originality, she was a fashion teacher but she was very insightful about animation and the other programs. i only wish i had more then 15 mins to talk with her XD cause i had a 1000 questions. but this thread has answered a handful of them. im actually on the SCAD site applying as im typing this. I plan on sending in my portfolio on a later date, i talked to my old animation teacher and he’s gonna help me make something that will hopefully blow them away and up my chances at a good scholarship. in high school i was a B student but all my science classes were a++ ( 110%-125% XD )… im currently in community college during my first 2 years i had a 3.6, but this last year ive fallen into a depression and have been slacking so hopefully that doesnt hurt me in the long run.

as far as SCAD its self… ive lived in the same state and the same area for all my life so the chance to see a new area and new people grabbed my attention, and since Georgia is alot different then where im from ^^ i think it’ll be a nice change.

so hopefully i’ll get accepted and be able to try SCAD for myself :]

Good luck with your application!

^^ TYVM! ( message to short ) XD lol… i’ll keep you posted on how things go

I find out if im accepted in 3-4 weeks :D

Fingers crossed for you!

WOOT!!! I got accepted yesterday :D!!!
