My son received the NSCS information at the cost of $95 for a lifetime member. I called my son and he stated he thought… it was a scam and was going to talk to his adviser on this! The University he goes to, have an Alumni Chapter. So will mail him the materials sent here. He is in his second year, and living off campus, so why was the materials not sent to him at his current address if they know he may qualify for this NSCS?? Will be living there.
From everything I’ve read it’s not a scam and they give out a FEW scholarships but mostly they just collect membership fees.
There have been lots of threads on this. Most say they take your $$ to fill your mailbox with junk email. It often seems that new members are encouraged to go out and advertise on social media, as frequently a new poster will show up on cc touting the benefits of it. Consider looking up some of those threads before you part with your hard earned money.
As a president of an NSCS chapter, don’t waste your money. Odds are, there is no benefit. They give away so much in scholarships, but you never hear of announcements and no matter how many people apply for them, you never get them. The success of NSCS being beneficial is dependent on the chapter and how well it is organized, how much effort the student wants to put in. After spending years dealing with NSCS national office and trying to make the best out of NSCS, I’ve realized it is nothing more than a shady business practice under the guise of an honor society. Guess what? With a 3.4 GPA freshman year, they get the most amount of students because all the courses have been easy and then you’re in no mater what. And your student has not been nominated by the local chapter president, the chapter president has been coerced into harassing the school’s registar’s office to release to national office eligible member of the 1st and 2nd year students that are in good standing and have a 3.4 GPA or above. If we don’t make the school send the information out, we don’t get any funds to do any activities with the chapter. And National Office couldn’t care less if the chapter is struggling and has 3 members, they need the chapter active to get more students to get this ‘prestigious honor’ to pay their $95 fee, so they make more money. And that money is not equally shared, so students that try and give scholarships to their worthy members can’t because their chapter struggled to do well. Your student is not getting an honor, they’re paying a $95 fee for a line on a resume that means nothing, the equivalent of “I donated plasma once because I needed beer money.” Join a campus fraternity focused on service, or academics, don’t waste your money and feed this disgusting machine.
Don’t do it. Don’t waste the money. It is a scam, in the guise of a honor society.
