Scams You've Encountered

When that happened, were you issued a number to use?

Here’s a ridiculous email I got today, in my junk folder. Too silly not to share.

Thx for the help. The IRS IP PIN system is down between 11/19- early Jan for maintenance. I am on medicare but not receiving SS yet so I have a SS account. A few years ago when I received the letter from the IRS, there was a place to check, I did not file my return, and sent it back. There had been a data breach at work. No credit cards or anything else happened then. I added a fraud alert to the frozen credit accounts today.

Evidently, Merrick Garland is trying to get hold of me. The poor man is holed up in some ratty hotel next to JFK, waiting patiently for me to pick up my package:

Possibly today but probably not

I’d jump on that mighty quick - that’s a lot of $ to be sitting on and not claiming!

Oh dear.

I’ve read that the obvious falseness is intentional. They send out millions and millions of these emails and want to winnow out those likely to fall for scams. They are indeed looking for those not in their right minds for whatever reason(s).

Indeed, and there is quite a secondary market to sell the names of people who have fallen for one scam to other scammers.

My Puerto Rico son just got mail delivered to him at oldest son’s house. Puerto Rico lad has lived in PR since Jan, here in PA before that, and in MD before PA, FL before MD. Oldest son has lived at his address in Ohio since Jun (I think - very recent), NC before that and GA before that. PR boy has only visited the Ohio address once two weeks ago.

How in the world can his name be on any mail delivered there? Here at home I would get it - old mailing list - but somewhere his brother has only lived for less than half a year and PR lad never?

FWIW, it was a postcard mailing from Ohio State offering a $20 gift card to learn Ohioans’ thoughts about gambling, wanting people to take a survey either online or via phone. I don’t think it’s a scam, but who knows?

Yet another fraudulent credit card arrived today!

justamom - any footage of strangers doing odd things yet at your aunties place?

Thanks for asking - happy to report no “intruders” but a troubling conversation with auntie when I told her “I see you were up at 3:30 this morning and went out of your apt, where did you go?” She insisted it wasn’t her, kept asking how I knew it was her, and more. I calmed her down by telling her we all forget things. But yeah, it’s not looking good for her. I’m researching memory care homes. :frowning:

I actually know a person who is being catfished. I don’t know her IRL. She was part of a cancer support group I was in when my husband had cancer. Her husband died (my husband was one of the few in the group to survive - esophageal cancer). The things she believes are ludicrous. She met this guy online I guess. Supposedly lives in Vegas and us wealthy and knows a lot of famous people. She has never met him. It is always going to happen but something always comes up. They were supposed to be getting married in October. A huge wedding with celebrities coming. Celine Dion was going to sing at the wedding and someone famous was going to walk her down the aisle - like Tom Cruise famous. Celebrities had supposedly given very generous gifts like luxury RVs etc. The wedding got cancelled for some dramatic reason. The latest they were finally supposed to meet - he was coming for Thanksgiving. But his pilot wanted to fly to the other coast to see family.

I can’t even remember half the crazy stories. They’re so ridiculous you almost wonder if she really believes it or if she is the ones playing us for attention. Her kids are besides themselves. Have even got eldercare involved. She has fallen out with everyone. Left the widows group she was in because "they don’t support her or want her to find love. ".

It’s not the first time. She got swindled out of her vehicle. Someone was going to buy her a new fancy car - all she had to do was sell hers and send them the proceeds. Has been wanting a puppy and got swindled on that. It’s bizarre what she believes

It’s also bizarre that after being fooled several times, she still believes this catfisher.

Agree. I’ve never said anything to her as I have her FB hidden cause she can be a bit annoying. I was late to all the drama but have talked to one of the other widows. I really find it hard to believe she can actually believe this nonsense.

Absolutely heartbreaking, and whoever this is doing it to her is a jerk. I assume there’s money from her to them, otherwise there’d be no reason for them to stick around…

I imagine there must be. She does not have much. I think at one point he had her pension being paid into some strange account. She could not even replace her car after the previous incident. The big fear is that she’ll lose her home. But she absolutely will not listen. Even after the “cancelled” wedding that everyone knew would be cancelled. People have even offered to take he to Vegas to meet this guy (who no doubt lives nowhere near Vegas - the car people were out of Jamaica I think).

She is in her 70s and the picture of the guy is a much younger person. I have lost count of the number of times they were supposed to meet and something “happened” to prevent it.
