after a letter from your counselor i'm sure northwestern will be understanding, i have heard of rescinded admissions but for some reason in my memory most of them seem to be from UCLA. don't know why.

i don't want to give you false hope if you end up getting rescinded, as that would almost be meaner than telling you to expect to get your admission revoked, but, if only for the sake of your temporary sanity, i would imagine the worst that's going to happen is "academic probation" upon arriving at the university, which just means don't fail out once you get there.

really, the best thing for you to do right now is to call the admissions office and explain that you received a D in your final semester, but that it is not reflective of your ability (or whatever your counselor is saying in the letter) and that your counselor is sending them a letter attesting to that. they should be able to tell you what's going to happen right then on the phone, and this should greatly ease, at the very least, your uncertainty.

i'm a student at northwestern currently and i can tell you the admissions office is full of very nice people and they have a lot of confidence in the students they admit and i'm sure if they were willing to accept you as an applicant they are willing to give you the benefit of the doubt.
