I’m surprised no one else is as shocked as I am that college would enter a dorm room and call the police because someone smelled marijuana. Iowa has a 6 month prison sentence or 1,000 fine for possession of marijuana. Wonder how those Grinnell students feel about that surprise and how their parents feel about the school involving police. That just doesn’t seem like the culture of self-governance Grinnell boasts about.

I agree totally, cynthialouise. If it was not an urgent health or safety issue, why involve the local police? Campus rules and discipline processes should have been sufficient to handle the situation. What is next, inviting local police to come into dorms every Friday night looking for under-aged drinking? I expected a more low-key, common-sense approach from my student’s school, especially when they are so proud and protective of their self-governance structure.
