Hi,

I'm an Asian female applying SCEA to Princeton from Canada. Any feedback will be very much appreciated! I can definitely chance back.

Here are my stats:

SAT I (breakdown): single setting 2320 (CR 730, M 790, W 800)

SAT II: Math II (800) Chem (790) Physics (790)

GPA: N/A, 96%-98% average

Rank: N/A, but definitely top 1% - not sure where it would be reflected though (counsellor letter?)

AP (non-AP school, self-studied): Calculus AB & BC 5, World History 5, Japanese 5 (non-native), Physics B 5

Senior Year Course Load: Advanced English, Calculus, Physics, Chem, World History, French, Spanish

Awards: weak :( AP National Scholar Canada, Honour Roll for 3 years, Canadian Intermediate Math Contest top 10% (not really worth mentioning), and some regional small karate award

Certifications: Japanese Language Proficiency N1 Certified - highest professional level

Extracurriculars + Volunteer:

-Language-related: translator for Yale University's China Hands magazine (articles about Sino-American relations, Chinese culture, politics and economics; from English to Mandarin), local Japanese school (every Saturday for entire high school), Alliance Francaise French immersion camps (every summer), service trip to Guatemala for a week

-Canadian Red Cross: Youth Action Council Communications Director (fundraising/awareness events etc), Outreach Coordinator for Bugout during summer (a program where youth volunteers do workshops about disaster management/germ prevention for kids)

-MUN: Co-founder of school club, Secretary-General in senior year. Held a regional conference during first year of operation.

-Interact: local service chair in junior year (toy/snack/book drives, events in the community); International service chair in senior year (plans global initiatives and annual service trip)

-Music: Singing, piano, guitar, bass, ukulele, choir (entire high school and Alto sectional leader), Acappella (was in a 5-person self-initiated group that performed at graduation and sang national anthem)

-Karate: Purple belt, 2nd place kata at a small local tournament

-In total ~800 volunteer hours

Summer Activities: mainly volunteering and travelling, participated in Wharton's Leadership in the Business World Program this year

Job/Work Experience: A writing consultant at a company newly founded by friends at the Wharton summer program

Essays: CA - a lady at the retirement home came up to me and cried after I performed a song, because it reminded her of beautiful memories. I talked about the power of human emotions and how they could instantly connect strangers together, and related to how I wish to inspire others in my life. It's a pretty sentimental essay - not sure if it's a bit risky though.

For Princeton supp, I might write something related to culture because I moved to Canada from China at the beginning of high school and quickly adapted to the new environment. Still thinking of stories that won't be so typical since this topic is already so popular.

Teacher rec: still thinking about which ones, but I don't expect them to be that good (i.e. not personal and just generic rec letters)

Counsellor rec: :/ They don't personally know me, but I guess they could talk about where I stand in the school in terms of academics and extracurriculars.

State: Ontario

School Type: Public non-AP non-IB

Income Bracket: 80000-100000, financial aid (debating if I should apply) suggestions?

Intended Major: Social Sciences/Humanities (might put sociology and econ)

Hooks: New Zealand citizenship and lived in Shanghai for 10 years (not sure if hook :/), bilingual in Mandarin and English, full professional proficiency in Japanese, proficiency in French and some elementary Spanish -- I know there are lots of talented language people applying, but I did community service related to culture in addition to just learning languages. Not sure if that would help!

I think my main problem is that my app shows an extremely undecided person (which is true of me...). My test scores are almost all related to math and sciences while my activities are very different. Not sure if it shows that I am well-rounded, or that I am just doing a bit of everything and not concentrated on a single passion.

If you think I'm not qualified enough for Princeton, any suggestions about other schools would also be helpful! I'm definitely going for social sciences or humanities (possibly business).

Thanks so much in advance!
