Schedule with 2 co-ops in four years -- no AP/IB credit?

I decided not to sign up for AP tests because my school doesn’t teach the entire curriculum and it was expensive as hell. But I recently committed to Northeastern and I am unsure of the scheduling. I want to do 2 co-ops in four years, but i know i’d have to use summers to take classes and make up those credits. does anyone have a clue what that would look like? basically i’m just wondering how much time i’d be spending in the summer taking classes and such. also, how is tuition counted during the summer?

i have the option to take the CLEP tests which northeastern does accept for credit, but i don’t know which ones to take or anything, i would like to spend as little time as possible in classes, you know? and i’m not going to NOT do the co-ops because they were a deciding factor and i would’ve gone to umass without them.

so i guess my question is, do any current/soon to be students know what a sample schedule might look like? would it be worth my while to take some $80 tests to get some credit? the website says i can get between 3 and 12 credits per test, but i’m sure if there’s a limit or anything. basically i’m really stressed out about this and i should have applied to more colleges but i can’t do anything about that now and don’t know what to do! thanks!

Summer sessions are a regular part of the curriculum and are limited to Northeastern students, unlike the “summer terms” at other colleges that anyone can enrol in.

Each summer term is 8 weeks and you normally take 2 courses. Each summer session costs half a semester’s tuition.

Here are some sample scenarios:

I believe it is only the College of Professional Studies that accepts CLEP credits. You need to check.

Is it possible to have summer off if I have a bunch of AP credits?

Depends on your program and AP credits. If you mean no school and no coop, then no. Coops generally run Jan-June and July-December. So you will not have a totally free summer except after freshman year.

Summer school may seem intimidating to high school kids but once you get in the flow at Northeastern it will not be an issue.

@beczhou I am on the spring co-op cycle, so I will be in Boston May and June every year starting sophomore year. I won’t have to do any July-August classes because I brought in just over a year of transfer credits. So I won’t ever take summer classes, but I won’t have the entire summer off because of co-op. So it’s possible, definitely.

That being said, I’m actually pretty bummed I’m not going to get to take summer classes. Most everyone I know prefers them to regular semesters. There aren’t any Friday classes in the summer, you’re only taking 2 classes, and Boston in the summer is incredible. The classes tend to be easier as well, as many professors have to cut projects/unnecessary units due to time constraints.

Below text is from the online catalog, page 37. there’s more info there as well.
I couldn’t find a visual representation of all of this, but with this info I was able to map it out on a piece of paper and understand it much better.

I did find this link–it’s titled incorrectly–it shows the 5 yr 3 co-op program (not the 4)

Some sample schedules for the class entering in fall
semester 2014 are shown below. Please note that there are
multiple possible schedules and not all entering students will
follow these particular examples. In all cases, however, the
students will attend class on a full-time basis in fall semester 2014,
spring semester 2015, fall semester 2015, and the final spring
semester, either 2018 or 2019 in the schedules shown below.

Sample schedule—five-year, three-co-op program:
• Co-op in July–December of 2016, 2017, and 2018
• Full-time classes in spring semester of 2016, 2017, and 2018
• Full-time classes in summer 1 half semester of 2016 and 2017

Sample schedule—four-year, two-co-op program:
• Co-op in July–December of 2016 and 2017
• Full-time classes in spring semester of 2016 and 2017
• Full-time classes in summer 1 half semester of
years 2016 and 2017
• 16 credits distributed among courses taken on co-op (on campus
or online), heavier course loads in full-time terms, courses in
summer 2015 and/or AP credit

Sample schedule—four-year, one-co-op program:
• Co-op in July–December of 2017
• Full-time classes in fall semester of 2016 and spring semester
of 2017 and 2018
• Full-time classes in summer 1 half semester of
years 2016 and 2017

It depends on your major. For example, it would be near impossible for CS/Engineering/Business without credit going in. For BA degrees, it would be a bit easier. You will most likely need all the summer classes to do it regardless of degree.

At a talk for incoming students, the dean of the college of science said that it is now possible to do any program in 4 years with 2 co-ops, but I don’t know if he was referring to just in the college of science or if that holds for the university overall. With no credit coming in, it would require taking classes every summer, including after freshman year.
