I'm running into some problems for my junior/senior year because my school had the brilliant idea of having a six-period day. My question is this: Which schedule looks more competitive to a selective college?

Schedule 1
Junior Year:
IB Math HL
IB French SL
English 11 Honors
AP European History
AP Biology
Concert Choir (Highest Choir in school)

Senior Year:
IB Math HL
IB French SL
AP English Lang.
AP Macroeconomics Sem1/AP US Gov't Sem2
AP Physics C
Concert Choir (Highest Choir in school)

Schedule 2
Junior Year:
IB Math HL
IB French SL
IB English HL
IB European History HL
IB Biology HL
IB Physics SL

Senior Year:
IB Math HL
IB French SL
IB English HL
IB European History HL
IB Biology HL
Theory of Knowledge

Special things to note:

-Voice is a major extra-curricular of mine. Would it be bad to not do Concert Choir? I would not be able to try out for all-state choir.

-Under Schedule 2, I would be an IB Diploma Candidate. No such honor under Schedule 1.

What do you recommend? My counselor considers both of these very rigorous. Help!

Disneyguy,
Coming from a school with both IB and AP, I understand the hard decision. My schedule looks exactly like your second one with all IB courses...and yes, I unfortunantly won't be able to do some classes that I really like. However, what persuaded me to do the IB diploma was the fact that, if you look, a LOT of colleges (especially competitive schools and ivies), give you college credit for IB courses. I've seen multiple schools which offer up to a year and a half worth of credit as well. Another thing to consider is the fact that IB is one of those internationally recognized programs, which means that if you were to go to school out of the country, you'd have a MUCH better shot. As far as voice, I'm sure there are clubs or other programs outside of school that you could join. College admissions love a student with passion and it's a great thing that you've found one, why not try starting your own choir or joining a largely recognized organization?

Why don't you do all HL?

Heh, in IB you can't do more than four HLs. Some rare people, with hardships and (I guess) bribes :P get five HLs. But, by rumors, those crazy people don't sleep and are choosing between Cambridge and Harvard.

Thank you for the advice, megan!

Which schedule do you think will make you happy? It seems that you have absolutely no electives until senior year in schedule 2. Considering that your guidance counselor thinks both schedules are rigorous, you won't have a problem with her recommendation, because she'll check off the "most rigorous schedule at the school" box on both schedules. I think both schedules look competitive to selective colleges. I prefer Schedule 1, because it ties into your passion (you have a voice class), very rigorous, and for me it shows that you actually have interests other than the standard core classes. Sure you won't be full IB diploma candidate, but wouldn't you still get college credit for both the IB and AP courses, depending on whcih schools you get accepted into? You can still be in a the school choir (and try out for all-state) and still take your passion to the next level outside of school, by giving free voice lessons to inner city children, trying out for the community theatre for musicals, and etc.

If you do the 1st one are u still an IB diploma candidate?
I say u go for full IB. It looks better on your transcript than APs cause IB is more than just a class. Its a life.

^^^^Nope, no IB diploma for the first one.
