It is senior year!! Let him do what he wants and will enjoy. My S also wouldn’t have given up his senior shows to do auditions, and luckily he did ED so it wasn’t an issue. But I know he would have been sad to not be in his final show.

I’m similarly facing scheduling issues, but I didn’t want to start a new thread just to resolve them, so I hope this is alright–I certainly don’t mean to hijack this topic, though!

I’m a rising senior, and was planning to drop math this year. I’ve completed everything through Algebra II, so I’ve filled the graduation requirement. Not to mention, math tends to lower my GPA and stress me out! However, I’ve recently began to rethink this decision. My guidance counselor recommends me taking math, but it interferes with my drama class. Of course, I would be able to use my drama class to receive proper attention and time with my monologues from my teacher, so not taking it would be a loss, I think. Thus, you can see my problem. I’d really appreciate some honest advice! Thank you so, so much!! :)

What schools are you planning on auditioning for Chimerical96? I guess it would depend. My daughter could not fit Physics in her senior year and I was distraught over it. She ended up still getting in to Tisch, Syracuse, and a few other good MT programs. Her grades were 50% and the audition is the other half. Make sure you have the time to spend on nailing your auditions! Very important! My D was an Emcee for our Dance Marathon and had the lead in the school play and musical. She managed to juggle it all and would never have considered not performing in her final high school musical. Break legs to all of you going through this journey this year!

I dropped an advanced math course in my senior year, Chimerical, and it was probably the best decision for me I made that year, other than choosing my college! It didn’t inhibit me getting in anywhere, and my senior year was so much easier because of it. However, if your grades have not been strong throughout your high school career, you are planning on applying to several BAs, or have a top-choice non audition school, or you lack extracurriculars, consider taking the class.

My advice is, drop the math. You’ll miss more school than you think you will, with auditions and college visits, and you’d have all the stress of making things up when you get back. Of course your guidance counselor is recommending that you take math, but if you are really determined to get into an auditioned theatre program, the drama class is a better use of your time because you can probably research and work on monologues during that time.

Not to drag this issue out ad infinitum, but what math are you considering taking? Stats? Trig? Precalc? Something that suits the way you think, or something you’ve struggled with in the past? If you were my advisee, I’d probably suggest that you at least try taking math (stats can be especially useful) and see how it goes; your school probably has a cut-off for dropping a class without penalty if you think it’s going poorly or is having a negative impact on your other work. If you can give it a shot and drop it, say, mid-semester without penalty, then why not try?

I am personally on the side of dropping math…within reason though. I am also entering my senior year and have decided to drop my math because like you I was never very strong in it. I did take accelerated math though up to Precalculus/trigonometry honors. My guidance was against it at first (as they all naturally are) but after a bit of talking he gave it to me straight. If colleges can see you tried in it and you won’t be pursuing any career related, it won’t necessarily hurt. It does depend on the rest of your schedule though. Don’t slack off on your other core subjects. Try to challenge yourself with some APs or Honors if the former isn’t your thing. DONT drop math and take all regular level though.

Thank you all so much for your feedback! I am relieved to hear that dropping math won’t kill me, and, in the long run, I can’t imagine my day without drama class! My other classes are mostly honors, so I do hope colleges won’t write me off as a slacker! Thank you all so much for giving me quite some relief, though! :)
