Scholarship awards

Can I mention what scholarships I hope to receive during a college admissions interview?

No, because you have not actually won them

My problem: family makes 184,000 so financial aid is out. I’m hoping to get merit scholarships from anywhere.

Reading between the lines you want to go to Syracuse, your family expects you to win merit scholarships to pay for college, and you want to mention the possibility of winning awards during your college interview.

Sybbie is right. You can only talk about scholarships that you’ve won.

You really have a bigger problem. You may be applying to various scholarships, but most are for small amounts and only for ONE year. HOw would you pay for the other 3 years? Also, it’s very hard to win any private scholarships without having a lot of “need” (lowish income).

What are your parents saying? How much will THEY pay?

Run the Net Price Calculators for your different schools and see if they are affordable. Don’t count on winning mythical scholarships.

Idk I made it pretty explicit in my interview with Riddle that I needed merit aid or I couldn’t attend. It worked out. But also my stats were super high for Riddle, so that was a factor. You only really have leverage in that situation; idk what Syracuse’s middle 50, etc, is.

My parents aren’t helping me pay because they are helping my older brother pay for college. And how can I mention merit scholarships I hope to receive from the school?

You can’t because Syracuse does not have guaranteed merit. I hope to win the lotto, but it does not mean that if I go on a job interview I should mention it (same concept)

Did they say why they’ll help him but won’t help you? Is it a temporary situation until he graduates, or do they not intend to help you pay at all?

When parents make too much for a student to get need based aid but can’t/won’t help pay, students need to target schools that give guaranteed merit for their stats. You can take the federal student loans (~$5500/year) and should be able to earn ~$3k if you work during the summer. If there’s a SUNY you can commute to, that would cover your tuition, so that would be a good safety.

Look for schools that offer at least a full tuition award. If you get a job now and work part-time during the school year while you’re in college, you might be able to cover the balance.

They won’t help me because my brother is really nonchalant about life and im actually the focused one so I’m expected to get scholarships and stuff while my bro is a lost cause so they need to help him.

@NkechiNicole What are your stats (GPA, SAT, ACT), where are you applying, and you are certain your parents will not spend one penny on you for college? When does your brother graduate, how much per year do they spend on him for college?

I have a 98.95 (ranked #3), 1360/1600 sat score. Didn’t take the ACT. My first choice school is Syracuse (extremely dedicated to this school).
They will not help me at all. Probably will only give me spending money so I can at least eat. My brother graduate in 2019 and they pay about 5,000 per year for him.

For Syracuse, I’m hoping to get any of there full tuition scholarships. Like the 1890 scholarship, refuge scholarship, etc. It’s just that I heard that Syracuse isn’t really helpful with money situations.

My scores are above Syracuse’s standards and I have a couple of leadership positions in my school.

Does your brother live at home and commute? What school only cost $5k per year? What is your intended major? Is Syracuse close enough to home for you to commute?

Did you take the PSAT? Your SAT misses the 1400 cutoff for full tuition at University of Alabama but you may want to check out this list:

My major is business, entrepreneurship and Emerging enterprises. I took the past and got a 1290.

He lives at home and commutes. Syracuse is close enough that I can come home on the weekends.

Definitely going to check out that list.

And before I meant 1870 scholarship not 1890 scholarship.

If you’re close enough to a SUNY to commute, there’s your safety. Tuition is only ~$8k/year. The federal student loan & summer work earnings would cover that.

Syracuse has a HIGHLY competitive business school. I honestly think you should NOT expect to receive a full tuition scholarship from this college. Sure…apply, but really…you need to also find some schools that are more affordable.

Are you saying your parents are giving you not one penny for college? If so, you are going tomhave quite the time funding a private school like syracuse which costs $60,000 a year…or so.

Are your parents expecting you to attend a NY community college and commute from home? You might be able to pay for that with the $5500 Direct Loan you can take yourself.

Fully finding a college with a $60,000 a year bill is unrealistic…so cast a much broader net than just Syracuse.
