scholarship chances for whitman?

Hey there,

I was wondering if I have a good chance at getting a good scholarship to whitman? I won't even consider it if its above 30k, and maybe even 20k because then I'd rather go to UW which has access to its med school, urban city, and D1 sports. I'd like whitman because its small, but like I said, unless I get a very decent financial package, I'm not sure if its worth it.

You look like a great Whitman candidate b ut a half tuition scholarship might be tough to get. You don't mention if you qualify for financial aid...if so, it might be a possibility. On the basis of a scholarship alone, I don't think you'll get what you're looking for..but a combination of the both might work.

You are definitely a strong candidate for admission and they have some interesting merit scholarships and try to meet need. Don't be afraid to communicate with admissions office and financial aid if you need more information. They are very friendly. And Whitties are not so likely to be on these boards so if you have more questions you might try their Ask a Student feature on the website for more direct information.

You should do Model UN to increase your chances to get in.

gmoney95
Will Model UN help increase scholarship money? If so by how much?

in and of itself, Model UN will not increase scholarship money. The magic pill is GPA, test scores, and need.

You look like a strong candidate for admissions, but don't take a bunch of random kids' advice. The admissions people at Whitman are nice and want to help you. Ask what scholarships you might qualify for and how many they usually offer. You haven't mentioned need based aid - will you apply for that? Whitman, like most other highly selective colleges, doesn't offer huge non-need based scholarships. They don't have to. Bright kids want to come there.
And another thing, don't take up a new EC just in case it "looks good".

I have no clue how to guage things for Whitman, because I had a 33 ACT, almost the exact same class rank and GPA as you, similar amounts if not more EC's, and I was WAITLISTED. I had been expecting to get in and maybe get a scholarship (because I also needed some merit aid to help me with costs). If you're looking for merit aid, apply to maybe three or four schools where you'd be in the running for a good award. I had good luck with merit aid at Hendrix, Rhodes and Davidson (which is where I'm going). Also, I have a few friends who managed full rides at the UW.. but they might've been in state deals.. look into that, though. UW is stingy, but the merit aid is there. And definitely apply for the honors program if you're serious about UW.

Another 7 or 8 ECs this year would be good, so it takes at least two full pages to list them all. Also see if you can get that GPA up to at least 3.914; with a 3.913 they might think you're a slacker.

Actually...... Whitman is a mellow place, they couldn't care less about your 17th EC or the third decimal place of your GPA. You have an excellent chance, don't let the process stress you out. Enjoy your senior year and your college search should work out fine.

If Whitman is a top choice be sure they know that by your demonstrated interest. Schools like Whitman get quite good at sensing whey they are a second choice/back up and when they are truly where you want to be. Not surprisingly, they want to give funding to those who really want to be there and need help to do so. They really want people who really want to be there and are quiet comfortable, I think, waitlisting someone who seems qualified but not enthused or committed to them as the kind of community they are.

I think you'd be lucky to get about $10,000 tops.
