Scholarship for Finns. How hard? Any experience?

I'm still in high school and I love Vanderbilt U. I've recently stumbled upon <a href="http://admissions.vanderbilt.edu/Roby_scholarship_Final.pdf%5B/url%5D">http://admissions.vanderbilt.edu/Roby_scholarship_Final.pdf</a> and I'm now more and more interested in applying to vanderbilt.

I'm now just wondering how many people have gotten that scholarship? Does anyone know anyone who has got the scholarship?

Vanderbilt is a fantastic university. Your odds of winning a merit scholarship for Finns increase greatly if your test scores and grades are in the range of the current admitted class and if your essays show the university that you have intentions of using the resources of Vanderbilt very well. Seek out references that display how you might learn in a classroom and how you might contribute to the social fabric of the community. Your odds of winning this are likely higher than the typical odds of winning a Cornelius Vanderbilt scholarship since all of the admitted class…all 1600, are qualified on paper to win the merit scholarship. Please keep in mind that the Chancellor’s Scholarship is all about service, diversity of thought and national, racial, religious etc origins and social justice so it is possible that your odds would be higher there IF your letters of reference and essays showed your potential to contribute at Vanderbilt. Our son is a Chancellor’s Scholar and very active in organizations on campus but there is no one profile for any of these merit scholarships. The more varied the winners the better. Keep in mind as well that you are responsible for the costs of room and board. Tuition free is indeed a huge gift but you will be assessed based on family income for the costs of room and board. Your parents will have to fill out FAFSA and CSS Profile and whatever else is required of international students. Some merit winners pay full room and board, others might qualify for some discounts there.
I advise you to read the Vanderbilt magazines online. Also to read insidevandy.com and to google the vanderbilt admissions blog…the university blog. Get to know Vanderbilt well and picture yourself there and good luck. Remember that the academic standards are tall, so keep focused in high school.
Focus on preparations rather than on finding out who has the scholarship now. No doubt many Finn schools are aware of this fine opportunity and they are sending students to apply. Vanderbilt has many internationals so it is up to you to master the system and get your documents to them.

Thank you for your awesome reply! I will work hard! Thanks again!

The essay questions for Chancellors, the Ingram, and the Cornelius Vanderbilts are all available online. I suggest you apply for every one of them if so inclined. The more essays, the more they will know you. If you don’t get selected for the Finn, perhaps you will get a look for the Chancellor’s etc. regardless, you should be learning about how Vanderbilt treats admitted students re financial need aid if you are not a winner. American students get their need met as determined by the FAFSA and the CSS Profile with NO LOANS required. This is unusual in the states. Find out what the evaluation of your family income would mean as an international if admitted without the merit scholarships. I do not know.

Thank you so much:)
