Scholarship Thread for class of '27 undergrad/'25 grad

CCM is University of Cincinnati College Conservatory of Music or CCM for short.

CIM is Cleveland Institute of Muisc.

Newbie mom here too- whose kid applied to both and received offers from both and I still mix up which one I am talking about!

Thank you for your reply! I’ve got an email on March 2 with 5k “metit-based scholarship” and then on March 7 i had an email with different information including this: “In addition to any merit-based scholarship you might receive, all students with a GPA of 3.0 or above are automatically considered for CCM talent-based scholarships. These decisions are being made in the coming weeks, and you will be notified via email if you will receive one.”

Even though, my gpa is higher than required, I haven’t heard anything from them after that and still here with my 5k as i was before haha
Wondering if i should annoy them with scholarship questions or keep waiting

I don’t even know which scholarship is which. One says CCM Honors Scholar and the other Cincinnatus Century Scholar. Is one of them for academic achievements and another for talent?
Also, it seems that CCM doesn’t know yet what tuition will be for 2023-24 school year. It’s difficult to balance the numbers when one doesn’t know what is the final cost.

Googling seems to indicate that the Cincinnatus is for academic merit.

Thank you, that’s good to know.

Do call. They will likely clarify the email for you.

TODAY’S UPDATE

I’m adding the average full-price COA for the schools where I have been able to find it on my own journey, so that future readers can see how much the schools might cost if they got a similar scholarship.

COAs are approximate. They include, per year:

  • tuition
  • room & board
  • fees

Other costs vary so much based on your kid & program, I’m not including them unless noted.

Please correct me, or tell me if you know any!

Unfortunately, almost all of us have faced this, learning that college is expensive and there just isn’t a way to make the very expensive school our child wants to attend possible. The finances are also a part of ‘fit’ and you have to consider the cost.

You are right, it is a long way from $20k to $60k, and you’d have to do it for 4 or more years. If he has a full ride at a state school, you’ll be able to buy a lot of lessons and experiences with the money you save. He might be able to do a summer residency, a study abroad experience, or something else.

Yes, that’s what we told him. There will be money for European study trips and just day to day extras. He loves to travel and did last summer in Italy on scholarship through Blair’s pre-college. So he does see the value in that, and that will soften the blow some. The hardest part for him is just having to do a liberal arts program. It’s not the prestige of the conservatories but the singular focus that is so appealing to him. On the other hand, maybe he’ll learn a lot of valuable things by being pushed in other directions.

My son is a senior at a state university. He’s really been able to spread out his general education classes. He has taken one here and one there over the four years. It’s not like high school, with math, English, science, history and music, every semester, every day. It’s more like music theory, music history, music lesson, music ensemble, studio class, departmental, (and English 2x/week, not every day).

My musician is taking his last three gen Ed classes at the moment (yes he avoided them this long). By way of encouragement, he’s not exactly enjoying those classes, but he’s more mature about them now, and we had a nice discussion yesterday and he told me he can see that what he’s learning in a couple of these classes is actually important and he doesn’t mind it. His study skills have matured, his mindset is just different than his 17 year old self. With maturity comes more ability to handle some of the frustrations and challenges that come with these classes for some students.

His university advising steers the music kids to certain classes in some categories as well, so my son took physics of sound” and at least there were other music friends learning along with him about how sound travels through the air and through tubes and along strings and such.

He also found one gen Ed class along the way, something outside the public high school offerings, that he ended up really enjoying.

It’s disappointing to not be able to go the conservatory route, but hopefully the parts of the state university experience your kid is dreading won’t be as bad as he thinks.

Personally, I suggested to my son to only apply to schools that have a liberal arts program JUST IN CASE he decides to switch away from music. I know kids who went to art school for college and decided it wasn’t for them and transferred to a traditional college. None of their art classes fulfilled any of the general requirements and had to start all over again. They didn’t take any general ed type classes in art school that they would’ve in a liberal arts college. Anyway, my son is in a regular university (DePaul) that happens to have a school of music with a conservatory-like curriculum. They don’t call it a conservatory though. Side note, my son discovered he really likes philosophy after taking some of the required courses, even considering it for a minor.

I think a liberal arts education is valuable for young adults and should be encouraged as a general rule. My son needs to learn those things too but not in a traditional college setting. As a kid with severe ADHD, he has mostly been miserable throughout his school years, but he’s able to focus and excel at music. So for him, a liberal arts college with a music program is not a good fit. Unfortunately, because of the cost of the conservatories, it’s our only choice for a bachelor’s degree.

I am in no way attempting to dismiss past issues. I do want to say, however, that college is a different environment. You can’t simply project high school learning on to college learning. Some kids do better in college classes…finally being away from the social distractions in high school. And…one bummer class a semester in college is different than only one happy music class a semester in high school (surrounded by frenemies you can’t avoid in the halls). The majority of his coursework will be music (I would guess). And he will most likely hang with the other music students and have a private teacher keeping an eye on him. Also a tutor for math is pretty common and easy to find in college. High level math students need cash and are happy to tutor others in math. Just like music students tutor non-music majors (maybe in piano). Having a tutor in high school may feel uncomfortable. In college, it’s pretty common. Of course, some kids have a harder time in college…but they may not have a private studio teacher and a major that they love. That one class each semester may be manageable…at least I’ll hope so.

I hope he’ll be able to adapt. I teach at a community college and tutor in the learning commons, so he is very aware of those resources. I do think a different atmosphere might help, but he will have new organization challenges no matter what kind of institution he goes to. We always hope for the best but are realistic about the challenges. Sometimes he struggles and sometimes he surprises us. Being in music program with others studying piano and composition (not just band kids) will be a nice change for him.
