Scholarship?

oh gosh guys that doesn’t mean that I hope. writerjordan my son wasn’t accepted into Honors (at least not that we know). We haven’t received anything about that so I am assuming he didn’t get in. Ill report back if we get a Merit Aid letter.

I have the alert, and I receive my Honors college packet around two weeks ago - I feel like all the letters haven’t gone out yet, though. Can others in here post their stats for reference? Mine’s 2130/1420 SAT and 3.76 UWGPA.

Sons UWGPA was only 3.2 and the Weighted 3.8 but he got a composite 2280 on SAT (1490 M/R), 32 on ACT and took 10 AP classes. I assume he didn’t get in Honors at UMBC because of the UWGPA, we are in state also. He also didn’t apply by November 1st so I don’t know if that had something to do with it. He applied like 11.25. He has gotten into all the other colleges Honor programs so I guess UMBC is more selective. Did anyone actually get a rejection letter for the honors college? We will have to see if the alert means he got merit aid. Good luck everyone!

I peeked in my D’s umbc account - she has the alert too. I’ll be parked by the mailbox now.

I know I can’t wait to get home!!

Letter was in the mail today! UMBC Centennial Award - 12,000 per year, 48,000 for four years. I’m in state and live about 30 minutes from the school. So happy - good luck everyone!

Ugh! My son says no letter today and we live in Howard county so we are close. AHHHHH!

NUHSGRAD Congrats!!! Awesome!! Are you going to commit? Stay on campus? That’s a great offer for in-state! I would be thrilled if my Son got that! That pays all tuition and books!

Nuhsgrad, on your UMBC portal does it show you got in the honors college somewhere? I still would like to have a rejection letter to be sure that he didn’t get into Honors program. I just assume since there has been no correspondence but if there was an indication on the website where would you see it? Do you have an option to accept Honor program or something? Just wondering. Now we have to wait another day to see of the Alert means anything for him! UGH Congrats again. My son has a good friend who got that last year and is commuting and basically isn’t paying for any college right now. He is in the Honors program so now I wonder if only Honors kids get scholarships?

Congrats @Nuhsgrad :D, i didn’t get a letter today and i live about 45 miles west of UMBC. Also on my account there was no alert so i presumed i am not getting any

No letter today but we are out of state (not far though).
Congrats @nuhsgrad‌ !

3.38 unweighted/3.83 weighted; 1990 combined SAT ( in-state). I guess my grades didn’t meet the qualifications, but I’m still bummed! Congrats to everyone who earned a scholarship (:

By the way, my friend just called, and apparently they’re still reading Honors applications (1/5 completed). So I wouldn’t worry about that yet.

@writerjordan‌ Thank you for the update on the Honors applications! I am hoping some letters come in next few days for many of you! I would be surprised if you didn’t get a scholarship @writerjordan‌ . That is pretty much what my son’s friend had who has the 12K a year scholarship last year. Don’t give up just yet!! Those are good numbers!

@ravensrock5696: Maybe the alerts come out in waves just like the letters? Don’t lose hope! I also live closer to the campus then I thought, so that may be why my letter is a little bit expedited.

@BB1945: Thank you! Not sure that I’ll commit to UMBC, but this definitely sweetens the deal, financials are a make or break point for me with colleges. I looked on the myUMBC portal, and I saw no mention of honors college or any indication of a decision. I found this comment on a thread from last year regarding decision dates for the Honors College, hope it gives some reassurance, post five on this thread: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/discussion/comment/15502226#Comment_15502226

I have a feeling that because of your son’s test scores and course rigor, he’ll probably receive some merit aid.

Do you guys know if when UMBC decides on scholarships, do they look more towards like GPA and SAT score or like the whole package (Extra curriculars and essay)?

@nuhsgrad‌ Thank you for the link. I also think that these decisions are going out in waves as well. I really hope there is something in the mail tomorrow but we won’t know till the letter comes for sure! I know this will give us some pause should my son end up with a good scholarship. He will have to make some hard choices as UMBC isn’t necessarily his first choice. We are still waiting on other scholarship results from invited competitions and such. I hope more Alerts come out soon for others here!

@ravensrock5696: I’ve heard that UMBC is rather stats focused when it comes to the school itself, but I think the scholarship committee is more holistic.

Also, a little bit off topic, but I was just wondering if you can still receive government funded/state grants if you’ve already received an institutional scholarship from UMBC? Can I stack a Pell Grant on top of the Centennial Award and use it to pay room and board? Maybe this question is a bit more suited for the Financial Aid and Scholarships board, but I figured I would ask here first!

One of my friends said they sent out all of the alerts last night, which is bad news for me. Anyways, you can definitely stack a Pell Grant, as long as the total cost of both does not exceed your total tuition.

Well I was up after midnight doing taxes to complete the Fasfa and decided to check the website again. Now there is a link to your actual award. My son got the Premier Award of 15,000 a year so 60,000 . There is a housing requirement that states that if he decides to live off campus his award will be reduced to 10,000. I guess this is because our In-state tuition is only 10k. It seems so mind boggling as all the small colleges have given him larger scholarships in total but their costs are twice the Instate tuition so it will be significantly cheaper for him to accept this. He is sleeping so I think I won’t say anything and let him open the letter tomorrow and then have to start thinking about choices. So for those of you who didn’t get their letter in the mail and are impatient like me, check the website. Good luck everyone!
