i got a letter from Cornell saying I'm a Jones and Irwin Jacobs Scholar. What exactly id this scholarship about and how many people get it?

I never heard of it, but if it's free money they are offering, doesn't hurt to take it up.

I actually don't even have to apply. I just got a letter in the mail the day after my decision letter came saying i was given the scholarship, which will reduce the loan compensation on my financial aid or if i don't get financial aid give me $600 for books

That's awesome. As long as they don't need anything, then it's all good.

Special Awards
The programs discussed below carry a financial award that is included in the financial aid package. For students who apply for financial aid and are determined to have sufficient need, the award will reduce the loan and work portion of their financial aid package. Students who do not apply for or do not qualify for financial aid will receive an award to pay for books.

Jacobs Scholars

In 2007, a select group of students became the first class of Jacobs Scholars, an award established in 2006 by Cornell alumni Irwin Jacobs 54, BEE 56, and Joan Jacobs 54. Irwin Jacobs founded QUALCOMM in 1985, where his innovations in technology charted the course for wireless communications.

The Jacobs family and the College of Engineering believe that the future will be based on innovation in engineering and that todays engineering students will be instrumental in addressing the challenges and opportunities of tomorrow. The number of students entering engineering hasnt been growing, says Jacobs. We hope additional aid can increase the pool of students entering the field and therefore improve the economy.

Students selected as Jacobs Scholars will exemplify strength and potential in academics, service, and leadership, establishing a legacy of excellence for Jacobs Scholars in years to come
