I've been looking around in some books at borders and found this book called Scholarships. Its a huge index of thousands of scholarships that you can get. I looked through a lot of them and found that I only apply if I'm a minority.

I'm just a White Male looking for some money to help pay for college. Certainly my parents have the money to pay it, and I have a lot saved from work, but I don't want to put all the burden on them. I'm planning on staying in california.

I've also checked out FastWeb but I haven't actually won any scholarships there.

So my question is, how can I get some money for college? I'm looking into cal grants, but I don't think I am eligable for that either. My intended major is Physics.

You will most likely get your best results by looking for merit scholarships that come directly from the colleges themselves. On the Parent Forum are several bookmarked threads about merit aid.

Basically, you should try to look at schools that offer merit money and you should be at the top, or close to the top, of their applicant pool (in terms of GPA, SATs etc). If you go to college web sites, under financial aid they often will describe these scholarships.

If you spend $15 to subscribe to US News Premium College Edition, you can see their recommendations for schools that offer good merit money. Also, under each school they will tell you what percent of their applicants get merit money, and on average how much they get.

Weenie: Thanks, that did help. I'm going to check that out. Unfortunatly for UC's, I'm not going to be in the top of the applicant pool with my 3.7GPA. BUT, I've been studying a lot for SAT, so hopefully that'll help.

Thanks!
Any more reccommendations? Pass them on.
