I know that there are many Feb. 1st deadlines for FA and scholarships, but I will not have sent out all college and HS transcripts until the end of this week. The schools I applied to said 10-12 weeks AFTER they receive all of your credentials, but by then it will be too late. Many of the scholarships require that you are formally admitted first. I can not complete FASFA application because my parents will not give me their info on taxes, income, etc. because they do not want me to go to another school. Is it possible to just apply, be accepted, and then take out ALOT of student loans? I was turned down by the military when I wanted to enlist so I know that is not an option. I'm kind of in a pickle and any advice would be greatly appreciated.

ALOT of loans — sends chills up and down my spine.

Why exactly won’t your parents agree to the FAFSA?

Outside of the Stafford loans (which require a FAFSA) it’s nigh impossible for a student to get loans in their name without a cosigner (99% of the time… parents)

For the past year just been taking 1 class at a local university and 1 at a community college. They say they will only pay if it is one of the local schools so they can keep an eye on me. when i am not in school, i work a lot for minimum wage. My parents make a good amount of money and live in an affluent city so whenever i try to apply to learn a trade I get shut down. I tried military but was disqualified. Ive tried to just get a job and live on my own but I do not have the most stellar credentials, plus this economy is not helping. I tried reasoning with them ex. if i got to community college and get an associates could i then transfer? absolutely not they said.

I am just trying to get accepted to any school far away from home and take out student loans to pay for all of it.
s
i am 19 and can not be considered an independent until i am 24 so im kinda screwed with the whole FAFSA thing

First of all, going out-of-state will likely cost at least $28k-50k per year. No one is going to lend any 19 year old that kind of money without a cosigner. I think (correct me if I’m wrong) the most a young student can sign for without a co-signer is about $6-9k for Stafford/Perkins/and some extra for denied parents (and in your case, since no FAFSA, you might not even have that option.)

Secondly, have you done something in the past that makes your parents not trust you?

Thirdly, why not go to a local school if they’ll pay for one?

Lastly, right now they say they won’t pay for you to transfer in the future. However, right now you’re 19 and they think they need to keep an eye on you. If you do super-well over the next two years, you’ll be 21 and maybe their opinion will change.

last yr around this time I had planned to move out to CA. I had A LOT of money saved up from working in middle school, high school, and some college. I made the mistake of telling my sister thinking she would support me, but she ended up telling my parents. I had a joint bank account at the time which I had NO idea about and they took every last penny in there (still have not paid me back btw). Basically I have to rely on them for everything and that is the way they like it.
I KNOW logically the best thing to do is just get 2 yr degree locally then see where it goes from there, but my urge and anger to leave NOW has been my main priority and my grades have suffered for that.

I’m sorry to hear that your parents literally stole your money - that is awful. What did your parents say after you confronted them about taking your money? BTW…are your parents foreign?

But, there’s no way you could get loans by yourself to pay for what you want.

Get your 2 year degree here - at least you’ll get your money back since it’s likely your parent will be using YOUR money to pay for that.

Keep your nose clean during that time. Something has been going on to make your parent think that you’ll get into some kind of trouble if you go away now.

my parents are 2 middles class WASP’s (white Anglo-Saxon protestant) non foreigners. Oh well I guess Ill just shoot for a 4.0 then they might let me go somewhere else.

Not saying that isn’t the case here and we just don’t know the details. We all would like to think that. We would like to think that all parents are looking out for their student’s best interest.

But honestly, I have sat across the table from some parents who make you wonder… there should be a law against allowing you to have children. There are some real tyrants out there who I have just hoped that their children will eventually overcome the brow beating they have obviously endured over the years of their childhood. To see it just makes you want to spit nails. Get up from the table. And beat them until they beg forgiveness.

^^^

I agree. It’s entirely possible that the OP has done nothing wrong to cause his parents to be so overly concerned that they would literally take his money.

We don’t know the details. Either the OP has done some things in the past which make the parents suspect that he might “get into trouble” or party too much at a far away school, or the parents fear college life so much (because of its influences) that they want to keep absolute control over their kids.

I guess I first thought that the sister was older and also away, but perhaps the sister is younger and living at home.
