Does anybody know if Holy Cross gives out any merit based scholarships? Thanks.

They made it pretty clear in the campus tour/presentation that they do not. There is a single music scholarship and one for organ and there might be a tiny number of others (not sure). For sports, I believe they have basketball scholarships only. BC does not offer merit either, but I heard that Providence, Fairfield, St Mike's, Manhattanville, St Joe's all do.

It is my understanding, based on Holy Cross' 2005 President's Report, that HC is indeed starting to expand their merit-based scholarship program beyond the traditionally limited number. Look for this program to expand year over year as the school increases funding to it.

"This past year we experimented with offering substantial merit scholarships...."

Seemingly, Holy Cross is looking to expand its merit scholarship offerings.

Best of Luck.

Holy Cross gives out 20 half tuition merit scholarships (Ignatian Scholars) and also three scholarships for the study of Classics (Bean Scholars). The recipients also get invited to special college events, lectures, dinners and the like.

can you elaborate on the Ignatian Scholarships
The HC website does not mention them.

Perhaps they have been discontinued.

Bean scholarships still exist, but are advertised only on the classics dept. website. Maybe look at individual department pages?

From the College Catalog (http://www.holycross.edu/catalog/catalog.pdf):

"There are also a limited number of Holy Cross Merit-Based Scholarships available to students, however, eligibility is determined by the Admissions Committee based on superior achievement in secondary school. Each student applicant is considered for all awards for which he or she may be eligible, including many endowed and restricted scholarships."

These scholarships are not publicized because all applicants are considered for them and they are used by the Admissions office to try to attract the most qualified students.

My son is a current Ignatian Scholar at HC. The school does not advertise the availability but looks deeply into every applicant it accepts and then picks what it believes are the top 20 incoming freshman.

When the acceptance letter arrived, we were informed (a) you are accepted, (b) your have been accepted into the bio major (which is competitive; you can't just decide to be a bio major) and (c) you have been chosen to be one of our Ignatian Scholars.

Merit-based awards are offered at the point of admission. Student eligibility for these awards is determined by the Admissions Office.
The Ellis Scholarship is a full tuition scholarship which is awarded to a Worcester resident high school graduate.

Scholarships and Grants | College of the Holy Cross

Worcester residents who are admitted to the College of the Holy Cross and who come from families with incomes below $50,000 will receive four years of free tuition.

$37.4 million total annual aid; more than 59% of students aided with 100% of need met.

My son's friend was very bright and he received a Martin Luther King scholarship.

I've heard of more scholarships/grants than they list, but maybe that fluctuates year to year or they have too many to mention.
I know HC isn't very diverse and my D (multi-racial)was told by others that if her name wasn't "Colleen" or "Katie" she shouldn't apply. I also heard that the only miniorities were athletes, but HC is a very athletic school.
Are there scholarships for a minority student that is an excellent student but doesn't play a sport?

Each year, more than 380 (55%) of first-year students are awarded Holy Cross Scholarships with stipends ranging from $500 to more than $34,630, depending on financial need. There are also a limited number of Holy Cross Merit-Based Scholarships available to students, however, eligibility for these awards is determined by the Admissions Committee based on superior achievement in secondary school.
