Scholarships: Dependent vs. independent

If a student accepts a full-ride scholarship, is that student no longer considered a dependent for tax purposes?

I've read that scholarships and grants don't count when determining tax dependency status. If parents and student pay essentially nothing, and the expenses are covered by scholarships, then who is considered to be providing more than half of the student's support?

The parent would still claim the child. You are correct that the scholarship money doesn’t factor in the support. The scholarship certainly can’t claim the student.

Does grad school stipend money count? It’s only 2K a semester.
