Scholarships that look at passion and not grades.

So my grades weren’t the best in HS. I had a 3.64W cum and 1230SAT. I had an upward trend (3.1->3.7->4.0 junior).

I don’t think I can get many for that, but I got into PSU for Atmospheric sciences and I LOVE LOVE LOVE weather. Knew I wanted to do it since I was 6. I have a weather Twitter with 1.3k followers, 8mil views, and an Insta with 700 followers. I know a lot of mets locally and like I have a clear passion (says everyone I know). Anyone know any good scholarships I could apply for… PSU OOS costs big yikes!

PSU will likely be unaffordable unless your family can pay.

There are other programs. Where else did you apply?

Where are you instate?

Congratulations on your acceptance! Do you have to be at main campus or could you save some money by going to a PSU campus nearby and then transferring? PSU is very highly ranked for meteorology, no? Have you found any scholarships for your major?

@CCtoAlaska

That’s what this thread is about. The poster is looking for scholarships so,he can study at PSU.

@thumper1, I realize that. I was wondering if they’d already applied for any specifically related to the major.

“passion” and $2.29 will get you a cup of coffee. It’s the colleges’ fault that the term “Passion” is misunderstood. When schools use the word “passion” they don’t mean enthusiasm or deep feelings that send goose pimples down your spine. Nope. They mean accomplishments that they surmise are made possible by a clear deep sustained interest in the topic (as opposed to superficial or fleeting interest in one thing or dabbling interest in many). So for a student with a “passion” in weather, they’d look for accomplishments in that field and they’d expect involvement in weather-related activities (besides wearing a raincoat).

Have you asked any of your meteorologist friends? One of them might have a tip for you!

And you’re OOS so costs are $50k per year. There’s no way you’re going to get much, if anything, in outside scholarships to cover those costs.

How much will your parents pay each year?

In 2017 you said your parents said not to worry about cost. How much will they pay? Did you apply to any in state colleges in VA?

LOL…PSU…out of state…might as well go to your in-state college!

My parents said don’t worry about the cost. They can afford it, but I am trying to help them out…

PSU offers almost no merit. That’s pretty much a pipe dream.

I’d see whether weather associations/meteorological groups have scholarships you could apply for.

But whatever they offer is likely to be $1k or so. Not gonna make a dent in $50k

Good luck!

Did you apply for this at Penn state?

I think meteorologist are also eligible for the astronaut scholarships. Extremely competitive. https://astronautscholarship.org/
