Hi!
I was curious as to if the scholarships according to the website are set in stone. For example i have a 3.8 GPA as of right now but my combined CR+M is only a 1180 which qualifies me for the lowest scholarship…Does that mean that automatically the only scholarship I can get is the lowest one, despite my high GPA? Or is it possible that I could get slightly more than the minimum scholarship(lets say more around 12,000 than only 9,000)?
I will be taking the ACT for the first time in October so I’m hoping at least that will bump me up but I have already submitted my early action application. If I get accepted before I take the ACT but my ACT score would qualify me for a larger scholarship is it possible my scholarship money will be bumped up?
As far as I know they look at both GPA & test score to determine which scholarship. My son’s GPA was good enough for one level of scholarship but his ACT score wasn’t quite high enough for that level so he got the next one down. I would call the Admissions office and ask them about whether a late ACT score would bump up the scholarship $$.
I’ve been told multiple times that the scholarships are automatic, so you will at least get the lowest ($3,000) scholarship. They also will take your best test score so if you score better on the ACT they will use that.
agree with philly, i am pretty sure you have to meet both test and grade requirements to get scholarships at certain levels. Since your SAT is lower than the GPA( comparatively), you will get scholarship that goes with SAT.
since Temple option now exists and you have option to not submit test score at all, if i were in your shoes, i’d submit evidence to support Temple should up your scholarship amount, but use the lower scholly now for cost planning and comparison. and yes, Temple will allow for the late ACT as long as it is in by scholly deadline,. however, to save yourself trouble, consider waiting for your ACT scores to come in before you send anything in. what major are you going for?
Nursing, which i know if competitive and i might not get in but im really hoping to bring down total tuition and room and board down to about 30,000 all together due to the fact none of my in state schools offer direct entry nursing(other than longwood but i rather not go there) Its a bit too late to hold of on submitted bc i already submitted my app, its not complete yet though, still waiting on transcripts. If i indicated on my common app that im taking the act at a later date im hoping that theyll wait and see what i get?
they wont wait but they will let you send in later score and i assume consider revising… not aware of any in state preference for most majors. not sure on nursing though, i can think of one and i think 2 kids admitted to nursing who were out of state.
Just an update, I contacted admissions and apparently you can appeal to have yourself re-reviewed for a higher scholarships after you have already been admitted up through Jan. 15th. Hoping I can do better on the October and November tests!
I wonder if the re-review can happen if an admitted student raises his GPA? I hope that won’t be an issue for our S, but it’s possible. It’s also possible his GPA will be the same after one semester, though.
2 years ago, the scholarship announcement came with the mailed acceptance letter. scholarship info was not available when admittance was announced online.
Students can appeal their scholarship amounts. i think that is noted in a pdf file for scholarships. Since appealing is an option, that leads me to think senior grades will be looked at, at least upon appeal.
I just got a text from my wife, who just toured Temple with our son. Both were very impressed. There was an email today from his GC saying everything had been sent, so he needs to push the button on his app. Temple gets a lot of students from his high school; wonder if that will have any effect on how they balance his GPA.
Cross posting this information here as it seems relevant. My son was accepted to Temple and we just received his formal letter with this scholarship info. He has a 1450 CR+M SAT and a 3.18UW/4.1W GPA. All of his academic classes were Honors or AP Level (5 AP total). Based upon his SAT and W GPA, we thought he would be eligible for the Presidential Scholarship.
However, he was offered the Founder’s scholarship which means they considered his GPA to be >= 3.25 and < 3.4. That represents only a .07 to .21 bump to his UW GPA based upon their algorithm which leads me to believe Temple does NOT give a lot of weight to Honors or AP classes a. Not nearly as much as I expected.
Will consider appealing as his senior year 1st marking period grades are higher.
I did not receive my letter yet, but since I was not invited to the honors reception on the portal, I have been expecting to be in the same boat as your son, I also have similar stats. I’m glad I’ve been keeping up on here so I will now be less shocked when it comes. I have all As first quarter except for a B+ in AP stat, however, I read the appeals process to say they will entertain appeals for higher test scores, but no mention was made of GPA senior year. This will move temple down on my list, since part of the trade off of the area for me was the price. If I have other choices of better schools in a better area for a similar price as OOS founders, thats what im going to do. For example, if I get into Rutgers, I will choose Rutgers,as it will now cost about the same (in state)
@jnkam24, I remember reading that your unweighted gpa was high enough for the second biggest scholarship. If they’re not going by their stated requirements, there are going to be some disappointed kids and angry parents.
