I made semifinalist, but since then my counselor hasn't told me to do anything else, so I figured we had a while before anything was due. Now I see that the application is due Wednesday. I can't even log into to application site because I don't have the username and password they assigned to me. My school is on fall break starting tomorrow, and I have no idea if my principal has written me a recommendation or if my transcript has been sent or anything. What should I do? Also, if someone could post the writing prompt that would be great so I can at least start the essay.

You should call NMS to sort this out Monday morning. You need to complete your portion and your school will need to complete their portion. The school will need to send in both yours and schools portion to NMS by Wed deadline.
Here is the student essay prompt: “To help the reviewers get to know you, describe an experience you have had, a person who has influenced you, or an obstacle you have overcome. Explain why this is meaningful to you. Use your own words and limit your response to the space below.”
Best of luck to you.

Thanks! Maybe they could grant me an extension or something.

The student actually submits his/her portion.

After seing some of these posts about how inept schools are I think I have a better idea where the 1,000± students that don’t make it come from.

PremedGirlTN, it is so late in the process now that you must abandon a lot of what you consider appropriate behavior. Find your principal or GC at home. Get in touch with a school board member who might lobby them for you. Helping you in this matter is part of their job description. Be polite but insistent.

Get a parent involved or any type of adult who will advocate for you. You need to have an adult step in and be very clear that this needs to be addressed ASAP.
Agree with WasatchWriter that boundaries my need to be crossed in terms of contacting people at home. It has reached that time if school is closed this week.
Also call NM in the morning and ask them what to do since your school is closed for break. They may not be able to do a thing, but you want a paper and phone trail of everything you are doing to not let this opportunity fall away for you.

This happened to me- I found out that I made NMSF and wrote my essay on my own, figuring that my principal would tell me soon. She didn’t, so I told my friend, my grade’s other NMSF, that she’d made it and she decided to wait until she was officially told to get started. I had to go over to my principal to ask her for my username and password to register- she was completely clueless and had no idea what I was talking about. In the end it turned out her secretary had all of the paperwork and on FRIDAY, she called both of us to her office to tell us (as though we didn’t know) and sweetly tell me all of the things I’d told HER and she’d denied. Then my friend was stuck with knowing that she had 5 days to do her entire app including essay.
Not pretty, though luckily it seems to be ending well. I hope your situation does the same! Absolutely be aggressive and make sure that your rights are stood up for.

My D’s situation was better. Her counselor took a week off right after the day it was officially announced. She has to wait for a week to get the notice with password. So she got 2 weeks or so to write the essay. She has finally submitted her part of application to school on Saturday and the person in charge of the application at school was supposed to finish the school part of all 31 applications by yesterday. I hope the school will complete the applications and send them out before deadline.

I finally got in touch with my counselor and I have completed my part if the application. Thank goodness I saw that the deadline was this Wednesday here on cc or else I might not have gotten the application in!

^^ Congrat. What a relief.
