School in the 2020-2021 Academic Year & Coronavirus (Part 1)

Could incoming transfers/freshman request a few semesters off (GAP, LOA of sorts)?

I wouldn’t but curious to see if it’s an option. :frowning:

When people talk about their children’s schools, if you don’t want to list the name of the school, can you try to clarify what state you are talking about?

Comparisons with flu, mono, and strep are not at all valid.

@lovecpa I’m sure you could request it. Whether or not they would grant the request would differ both by school and by individual circumstances.

For those mentioning UCI, don’t forget that they are on the quarter system, so classes don’t start until Oct 1. (They have several more weeks to make a go-no go decision over semester schools.)

In general, UCI does not do deferrals. Now, obviously COVID falls under extraordinary circumstances, so who knows what they might do.

True. Maybe a better comparison would be Meningitis B outbreaks in college campuses before vaccines became available (~2013). Though there are still significant differences in transmission and death rates. Anyone know how schools handled that? Did they send students home? Lock down campus?

Nope, men b is also a poor comparison. Per the feds,

@bluebayou I believe lovecpa was referring to colleges in general, not just UC-Irvine.

Daughter graduates from Beloit college in May… Virtually.

My sons at University of Michigan Junior .

Hope that helps.

@lkg4answers my D’s gap year was approved by Goucher (attending), Dean, Rutgers, Old Dominion, Radford, Shenandoah, C of Charleston, Springfield, U Wyoming, and U Roehampton London. She got the approvals in writing before making her decision.

Antibody sampling beginning this week in NYS as per part of the plan by Pandemic Team. This will give a lot of information. So far, the testing started in CA is showing that a lot more people were exposed to the virus than they expected. This information also brings the death rate down.

So far good news which will mean good news for college campuses and the fall.

Therapies are also making good progress. The landscape to manage Covid19 will look different by fall that it did this spring.

UCs historically did not offer admits the option to start in a later semester/quarter.

Berkeley often has spring admits. Not sure if you can request it. Might be interesting if they offered fall and spring admits the option to swap start dates.

However, while that may help finding how many otherwise-undiagnosed COVID-19 infections there are, that does not account for an unknown number of undiagnosed COVID-19 deaths. Fire departments in some places have been reporting a lot more calls of “cardiac arrest, not revivable” than the normal rate of such. The deceased in question did not necessarily have a COVID-19 diagnosis.

Remember that Wuhan had 2,500 deaths of people diagnosed with COVID-19. But funeral homes in Wuhan were apparently very busy with tens of thousands of cremations above the usual number in that time frame.

In other words, we know:

Ck = known diagnosed cases
Dk = known diagnosed deaths

We do not know:

Cu = undiagnosed cases
Du = undiagnosed deaths

Ct = total cases
Dt = total deaths

Rf = Ct / Dt = fatality rate

The recent study may help in estimating Cu and Ct, but Du and Dt are still unknown. It would be a mistake to assume that the fatality rate Rf = Ct / Dk when it is really Ct / Dt.

College administrations are like everyone else in that they do not know the numbers which can allow them to make informed decisions based on informed risk estimates. They will likely have to make decisions based on guesses and assumptions that could easily be found to be incorrect later when actual information becomes available.

There are other situations where you may have to purchase X that you do not care for or think is not worth the money in order to get Y that is what you really want. Cable TV channel bundles and car option packages are typical examples.

Colleges do not like holding places at two colleges at the same time, so that can risk being rescinded by both if they find out. Also, that guarantees losing at least one deposit.

Most people might not realize, but for many/most schools the fall schedule is already set. Students are registering for classes NOW. Restructuring the schedule with classes on nights and weekends could draw a lot of pushback from the faculty, as well as requiring a total reset on the registration which is already underway. There could be union issues as well, for those who think they could just force the faculty to teach 3 am Saturday sections of Calculus I. Not so sure that would fly.

Somehow I think you missed the point of her post completely.

He might infect his professors, but hey, they’re all old anyway and should clear the deck for the younger generation.

This is my son. This last 7 weeks he’s been out of school have not been great for him. Lots of gaming and staying up late sleeping in late…it causes some tension between us as well because I really wish he’d do something more productive with his time. for at least part of the day. Thankfully he has a job that he still goes to a few evenings a week. We hope his college brings the students back, but if not he will attend online for sure.
