Sorry to push on this but trying to figure out how many colleges are having in person classes and what percent are in person. Do you think most Duke students have an in-person class? One class? A few of their classes?
I really don’t know @homerdog My daughter has 2, her good friend who’s a senior has 5. Reading the facebook pages, it sounds like a lot of people have some which is what I think drove 90% of enrolled students to be in Durham when only freshman and sophomores had on campus housing in the fall. But I have definitely heard some freshman didn’t have any. I haven’t seen a breakdown. This article does talk about some of the bigger classes that went forward with in person - but in my daughters case her bigger classes were remote, and only the sub 20 people were in person.
"But here is some good news. Duke will bring back the juniors and seniors who wish to live on campus next semester and allow the First years and Sophs who are on campus now to stay. Should be a relatively small number of additional students…seems most upperclassmen who were not provided on campus housing this semester opted to get apartments. The projected increase in students is not expected to materially change density or risk based on the strong protocols Duke has in place. All students living on campus have to turn in their keys at the end of the semester and will re-test upon return to campus next semester before being allowed to access the dorms. We’ll take it! Glad my D doesn’t have to move out the day before Thanksgiving ! "
Well done Duke! I’m glad they did the right thing about not requiring on-campus undergrads to move out of the dorms by Thanksgiving. Slowly, things are getting back to relative “normalcy”…
Just got word from my daughter that she tested positive today. She lives off campus in a quad apartment, each with their own bathroom and bedroom, but shared living room and kitchen. She is vigilant about mask wearing and distancing but all 4 of them tested positive. At this point she has a mild temp and some general achiness but claims to feel good. I am thankful I sent her with a pulse oxymeter.
Duke is also doing what I think is the right thing and allowing students to take LOAs without penalty until the day the second semester starts. Also
Duke did not give #s of what % of classes were in person this semester. My feeling based on D and her friends’ experiences it that the large majority were online. As I posted previously, I think one reason even her small classes were online was that the University required all classes be able to be accessed remotely to accommodate students who could not get back to campus safely, didn’t have housing due to de-densification, etc. Depending on the class subject/material it’s better to design that delivery to be online. Her classes are small and synchronous…when you have 10 kids on a a zoom it’s fairly interactive (though tiring mentally). My D is expecting that there will be more in person classes next semester now that Duke has the ‘how to test and implement masks and distance’ thing down. And even though the state of NC has moved to a more ‘open’ phase recently, Duke sent out guidance that all students on and off campus are still required to adhere to its no gatherings > 10 requirement. Just today it sent us a ‘compliance and conduct’ update summarizing all the disciplinary actions #"s/dismissals/etc. since returning to campus 8/7 with further warnings ‘don’t lose everything you’ve worked so hard far’. My gosh they even put a graphic of a barn in the email with googly eyes on it…in a typical year, groups/fraternities sometimes rent big barns and bus the students there for parties. Admin seems to know exactly what’s going on and couldn’t be more explicit that if students want to stay enrolled at the University, they need to keep doing what they’re doing.
President of ND should resign. I don’t see how parents could trust him to protect their students. There is no way he could stand in front of the community to ask them to adhere to Covid protocols.
Tufts is doing great. Still testing every three days at a very low rate of 0.03%. (only 4 active cases out of almost 15,000 tests this week)
I have never seen any student not wear a mask, except for eating. We have doubles and cohorts. Dorms and bathrooms are constantly cleaned…spotless, I would say. So happy I decided to attend this fall! Wear that mask!
DS19 at Carleton is in quarantine. They have had only a couple of positives but he was in an outdoor, 6 foot spaced study group with one of them. His tests are negative so far but another week to go in quarantine. School ordered Chipotle for them last night, and he seems happy as a clam at high tide. Still so much happier to be there than here, despite the craziness. I think this may be a better “education” for navigating life than a normal year at school.
I don’t remember where I read it it, but “The ability to put up with mild discomfort is a real superpower” captures the moment pretty well.
I don’t know how he doesn’t. And it’s just coming out that there were 18 law school colleagues there ? Sitting shoulder to shoulder Unmasked ? The optics are bad enough. But I hope they all had to quarantine when they got back to campus.
Putting aside for a moment whether Father Jenkins at ND should resign, a separate challenge is – who would take his place on short notice?
The President of ND must be a member of the Congregation of Holy Cross. That requirement could only be changed by the Board of Fellows – which is 1/2 Holy Cross priests – so won’t happen without the support of the Order. Holy Cross only runs a few colleges, including the Univ of Portland, so unlike say, the Jesuits, there is not a deep pool of talent available to tap for the leadership of ND. This is not a situation where a lay person could take over or a national search conducted for a new President.
Not sure but the President of Holy Cross College is resigning in a year. They are doing a national search for a Jesuit leader.
HC was almost fully remote this fall. Only a very few winter (athletes) are on campus from my understanding.
Does anyone have any idea how Providence College is doing ? I read they had a outbreak that is concerning the gov. of RI…
