i heard the school life in rice isn't very colorful , and students focus very much on their study, which really really frustrates me. is that true??!!if isn't, what sort of activities do rice students mainly take part in??

Um, no. This is not at all true.

What Dorian said. Just browse the threads on this forum for half an hour or so and you’ll see how enthusiastic Rice students are about things outside of their studies.

I was slightly on the other extreme where I did my homework in the small chunks of free time between everything else I had going on.

For activities, I played a couple of IM sports, did technical theatre for both the Visual Arts department and colleges, worked 30 hours a week for the university and the Housing department and did random stuff otherwise.

DS played club sport, pick-up sports, IM sports, attended mad parties, hung out with friends. Both kids said the social scene at Rice is very active.

There are people for who this generalization is true, but if you have any desire to participate in the social life / fun side of Rice, you won’t have any problems finding stuff to do–all the time.

For most people, Rice presents a vibrant social scene.

In my time so far at Rice, I have: played club lacrosse, played IM powderpuff, participated heavily in student government, worked with Engineers Without Borders, gone out to party consistently once or twice or thrice a week, visited the 2 national parks in texas and 7 state parks, gone to ACL, eaten at 100+ different restaurants and counting, schmoozed with alums and professors and administrators, worked out frequently, biked 30 miles around Houston once a month, advised twice for orientation, helped get our late-night restaurant up and running…and done a lot of research, attended academic conferences, and taken 18+ hours of engineering classes each semester. So no, don’t worry about not having fun things to do at all.

I have friends who will stay in their rooms studying a majority of the time, but I also have friends who will stay in their rooms playing video games all day. Your social experience at Rice is whatever you want it to be.

thx for your detailed answer, silent sailor. i can see there ARE many things to enjoy in rice! looking foward to collegelife!!!:D

thank u Tilgaham. yeah a nice college like rice should be like what u judge:vibrant and fun~

oh thank u anxiousmom~that’s exactly what i want

yeah but are clubs in rice popular? the guy told me while clubs in other school play an important rule in school life, clubs in rice are more like…um…furnitures(no offence but that’s what he told me)

I would stop listening to this source. There are many big clubs with extremely dedicated members, both in sports and other extra-curriculars.

Take a look at this [Rice University Student Activities](http://studentactivities.rice.edu)

Having gone through Freshman year, I will tell you that everyone here at Rice is different in their own way. You will see people who will party/play video games/socialize and still manage to pull off straight A’s, you will see those who are stuck in their rooms everyday, you’ll see people like me, who no matter how hard they try in class, will fail all their courses…
