RISD seems to be the number 1 option for artists who are looking for a variety of things. That said, taxguy did mention how MICA is a bit more flexible. I suppose it wouldn't hurt applying to both.

Does RISD and MICA offer admission during spring semester? And if I were to go to a Portfolio Day get my portfolio approved (let's hope!;)), would I still have to officially apply?

I guess I want to know everyone's experiences with portfolio days and reps vs applying and dealing with a admissions committee of sorts.

I suspect that neither offers Spring admissions, if for no other reason that they, like other art schools, value putting their brand and doing their assessments in their "foundation" program starting in the Fall.

A Portfolio Day assessment for most visitors is informal only, a way to get advice on your portfolio's strengths and weaknesses and to find out where you stand rather than a review for admissions as such. Some schools will offer a a formal assessment for purposes of admissions at a Portfolio Day (and you may want to contact their admissions office to find out about that -- including which Portfolio Days they will have representatives at). Some prefer that you come to their campus or submit it by mail.

In suspect that no matter what your Portfolio Day assessment would be you would still go through the normal admissions process . The schools need your transcripts, test scores, letters of recommendation, and essays and other materials in order to proceed with an actual admission.

Well, I know SAIC offers spring admission. According to modiam, MICA does too. So, I guess that makes 2 out of 3. The reason why I inquire is because I am willing to wait a semester 4 the best education.

Deadlines for Spring Term Applicants
Applicants are generally accepted only for the term beginning in September. If openings should occur, however, students who have successfully completed at least one semester of foundation work at a professional art college may apply for admission in the second semester, which begins in mid-February. The deadline for filing an application and all other credentials for spring term entrance is November 25. You will be notified of the Admissions Committees decision in mid-December. If you have been considered and denied admission for second-semester entrance, you will not be reconsidered for entrance the following fall.

I just wish I knew more about these schools before so I could have applied to all of them. I guess it would have given me more of an idea as to where my art stands in the world.

I think what you just wrote is an excellent reason for you to take your work to one or more of the National Portfolio Days. You can also talk to the different college reps about transferring. Then again, you may well decide by that time that everything is just fine at SAIC.

That is a great
idea-wish they held it in summer. But I have time to finish up some
pieces, so I'll be okay. ;) As for SAIC, I know I would do pretty decently there. It is just that, like I said b4, finding the best school could not hurt.

Applying to Pratt and MICA. Parsons does not seem like it is for me. Also, I am not thrilled about having to do their hometest. It might sound lazy of me but oh well. LOL. Seriously though, I planned on working on my new concentration series - not some arbritrary assignment.

College-ish, more and more schools, such as Parsons, are giving a home test. I honestly don't think that they do this because they think that a portfolio isn't enough to judge talent. I think schools are instituting this to weed out those who aren't very, very interested in that school. They want people like you to say, "heck , I am not that interested in Parsons enough to do a separate test." Parsons also has a pain in the neck type of test anyway.

See, I figured it is worth it for a RISD or maybe a Cooper Union. I work terribly hard on my portfolio anyway not to mention my grades, so home tests are definitely extraneous.

I like sending slides! Actual work is usually too fragile or big (in my case).

I just am not thrilled about stuff like having to do collages or drawings of mundane activities like brushing my teeth (quoting idea from Parsons website...I realize they said any activity you do)--I am a sculpture person. That's really where my consternation comes from regarding the home test. Anyhoo, I was only being half serious. I think, after I visit Pratt and Parsons and MICA, I will know for sure which ones to apply to. :)
