Is there any standard refund policy that schools are required to provide to students who withdraw from school mid-term?
I have two kids in college and they both have different plans. ASU - doesn’t refund anything after the 10th day but I can apparently apply for an 80% refund of tuition but all of my fees ($2,000 are non-refundable). UCLA - doesn’t refund anything after 15 days but has an appeals process but it is unclear what or how that works.
I believe it varies from school to school. At some schools you can get a partial refund if the withdrawal is very early in the semester. Agree that tuition insurance may be the way to go if you want that kind of protection.
Just to play the university’s side, they have no way to “fill that spot” if a student drops out, so it’s a pure loss for them. I never got tuition insurance for my kids (knock on wood) but if you are at all concerned, that would be the way to go.
Make sure you understand what Tuition insurance covers…I think it is only for documented medical conditions, not just “I didn’t like college”. We got it for my youngest because she is forever getting sick (mono) or breaking something.
It’s school-specific. At my daughter’s private, we did not get a refund when she had to withdraw for a semester for medical reasons, however the school did apply our payment to the following semester.
Just want tor reiterate that tuition refund insurance if for medical (including psychiatric) withdrawals. There are requirements for professional documentation and so on.
