Minnesota would probably offer a very good package for National Merit recognition and the ChemE program is excellent. The distance is not short but not that far either.

You did not say how much you can afford to contribute.

If your D receives a full ride or the equivalent of a tuition free scholarship, why would the cost of airline tickets be an issue?

If that is the case, then it is less an issue. We need to include the travel cost for several round trips per year plus the whole family attending graduation. Also, if it is not in driving distance, she may need to buy more stuff for living in the dorm than bring her own.

Just an update. We have visited 4 schools in the mid-west over the Summer. We will go to the TechDay at UMich next week.
The first application was submitted over the weekend to Minnesota. It is great that the application fee is waived for Golden Gopher Application and she will automatically considered in the Honor program and for merit scholarship. Also, no essay is required.
She will apply to 6 more schools, which she has visited, mostly by EA except for 1. If necessary, she may add a couple for RD although it is not likely. The schools on her current list are:

UMN at Twin Cities (submitted)
UMich (EA)
UIUC (EA)
Purdue (EA)
UWI Madison (EA)
Stanford (REA)
Northwestern (RD)

As a PhD student in Chemical Engineering at Michigan, I will say I’m very impressed by what I’ve seen of the undergraduate program. The department puts a lot of emphasis on teaching and mentoring. I did my undergrad at UCLA, and I’m blown away by Michigan in comparison.

It’s only a data set of two points, but I do think Michigan is a great choice for Chemical Engineering :-)

Thanks for the response. UMich still remains our top choice as we live in town for many years and we know the CoE is great. We are going to learn more about their programs in the TechDay next week although I know some faculties and many students from there already.
