im about a week into my senior year and i am having an extremely hard time figuring out to do with the rest of my life. all throughout high school ive taken visual arts classes and i know i want to do something in relation to that, possibly animation or illustration. ive looked into SCAD, SVA, PRATT, and other schools as well.
however, ive also been in concert band for about seven years. i love music and i don’t want to give it up. i don’t want to sacrifice one of my passions for the other, or end up somewhere with a really great art program and a terrible music program. i don’t know if there are music options for me outside of college, like joining an orchestra or something, but i would not be opposed to them. i just know that if i completely give up music, im in turn giving up a part of who i am.
a friend told me that NYU has a program (gallatin?) that allows you to combine multiple subjects into your major, but i can’t find enough on the specific school to make any decision. im just trying to be able to pursue both of my passions- even if i have to practice one of them outside of a school setting, i just don’t know what that setting would be ? please help.
UMich has a new animation program, a good School for Arts (STAMPS), and a very good music school. However, it is a very competitive school and is a reach for most OOS students.
SMU Meadows school of the art is consistently rated very well (#1 in usa today for non conservatory art schools). They also have a program crossing art and programming, not too mention a great music program.
A lot of art school types/parents of current BFA students hang out there and they may know of schools that have a music/arts connection.
Only one I can think of off the top of my head like that is CalArts - however not sure how easy it would be to take classes in departments that aren’t your major. However, we recently toured the school and they highly encourage departments to collaborate together and I assume there’d be a lot of club/extra curricular activities that would combine both passions.
We are applying to Calarts too. Same boat, only wants Jazz with Sound Engineering. This has been the same challenge for us. We were told the main goal when we met with admissions there, is to get in (which is not that simple in itself) with what you are best at, and then you can cross over. However it is crazy expensive unless you are instate, and have been told there is not much structure. You are basically in charge of making it happen for yourself. Yes lots of collaboration, but not much help with it. Also applying to several schools in Denver CO. Many Arts Dept’s. Still looking for other schools that offer this kind of cross over…it’s a shame it is not easy to find. We are still looking too!
