@patsmom I LOVED that! Thank you for sharing

I second what gouf78 said in the last paragraph two posts above; if your daughter wants computer animation, apply early - my daughter is at the Ringling Pre-College program, and having a WONDERFUL time - I flew her down, and attended the packed parents’ Q&A session. CA is on a rolling admissions, and the spots are quite limited - if she applied and did not get into CA, many students who decide on Motion Graphics end up going on in CA as well for their careers. (Though they are not a CA major, they still get jobs in CA because Motion Graphics students take many of the same courses.) I would recommend that your daughter learn perspective as well. There is a challenging first year class there which is on perspective.

Even the pre-college programs work you hard! My daughter is up early, classes begin at 8, (foundation class) until noon, hour lunch, one of two “majors” until 5, an hour for dinner, then there is a required hour until 7, but the studio is open until 10 if students want to work more on their projects. My dd is usually there with her room mate until 10. When I asked her if it was too competitive, working so much, she sort of growled at me. “I LOVE this kind of competition. I’m good at it, and I LOVE what I’m doing!” (Back off, Mumsi! )

Hope your D loves it as much as mine did!
CA at Ringling is NOT on rolling admission–but all other majors are. CA application is due by Jan 15 which is earlier than other majors. This is done so someone applying to CA who does not get accepted is still able to apply for another major.

Sorry, my bad. I did hear them say that for CA, apply as early as possible. They only accept about 60 in CA a year.

Applying way early ahead of other applicants ( like early admission in some colleges) is not necessary to gain acceptance into CA at Ringling. All applications are evaluated at the same time. But you have to make sure your application/portfolio is on their desk by Jan 15 and that it is complete. It is a drop dead date. So be early in the sense you have breathing room before the deadline to fix any last minute glitches…

Just an update… D3 has a 1/4 of her sophomore year under her belt. She was chosen as artist of the month and her work is on display in the cafeteria art gallery at school. She started art classes with a local artist who is working on technique with her. She said drawing is not needed… She can draw anything, copy from a picture in perfect detail or do a quick sketch. She’s teaching her oil painting and figures now… She loves it! She did very well in her music auditions, and will try for Govenors school for music this year, because she doesn’t feel she will have enough peices for her portfolio this year. She’s going to go to a portfolio day with a senior friend next month just to get the experience and may take a few pieces of hers just for feedback. I’d love to hear from some of you who have kids that started this fall! I have a friend that I reconnected with whose son works as an animator, and he does very very well in CA. Talked with him on FB today and he’s offered to mentor her. Pretty cool! I posted a similar thread in the visual arts forum, but already feel like you know “her” and got great advice here! So I’m looking for “what do I do now?” SHES actually stressing about it already, and I don’t want her to!
