I want to double major in linguistics and political science (international relations) but I have no idea what schools to apply to. I really don't stand a chance getting into ivy leagues so I'm looking for schools between 40-70% acceptance rates with really good linguistics or political science programs. I'm thinking about working for the foreign service and I really love languages and cultures
I live in Louisville, KY and would prefer a liberal arts school, but I wouldn't mind going to a university.

UMass-Amherst is 14th in the world for linguistics, and I would personally recommend it.

Linguistics is a very rare undergrad major, so if you’re serious about it, you should look for it before poli sci, which most schools offer. Unless your LAC offers a design-your-own-major option, you will likely have to go to a big state school. Or MIT.

Also, linguistics has very little to do with languages in the traditional sense, and even less to do with cultures. It is the scientific study of the structure and origins of language as a phenomenon, and has little application outside academia. Hint: people who like linguistics typically like philosophy, math, cognitive psych more than foreign languages or anthro.

I know I’ve looked a lot into linguistics and I’m interested in cognitive science as well. I know for sure I want to double major in political science and linguistics but I can’t get into top notch schools. I’m looking for less selective schools with good programs

University of Michigan is stellar in both programmes and is or is not a “top notch school” depending on what you mean by top notch. It is realistic to get into and is the easiest among the public ivies (UVa, UNC, UC:B, UM) to gain acceptance to.

Good luck!

FYI. Some advice for pursing a foreign service career:
