i don’t know if someone said this already, but i know Elon University, in Elon NC has an amazing stage management program. they also have a good MT and AT program.

Hi, I notice your post by accident too. I am currently a senior in high school and on the hunt for colleges in stage management. I would love to pick your brain for some knowledge in the field. From what I understood in your post and please correct me if I’m wrong…a bfa in sm is not necessarily going to get you that job?..the reason what I’m asking is because there is so much info out there and choosing a college that has a bfa or ba and then braking in down further to bfa in stage management or ba in theatre studies…it technical theatre… Am I better just focusing on just sm or going for the more liberal degree like theatre studies which gives me more classes in all the aspects of theatre…I am a very we’ll driven 17 year old…doing community theatre since I was 7 and I can’t get enough. I worked on stage as well as behind the stage and know my calling is behind the stage…(although my voice coach says otherwise) … Also some colleges work with equity theaters while others just have there own…I guess what I am saying I’m looking for the best place to get my education that will give me the best opportunities and with all the colleges throwing everything at you saying they are the best for you how do you know?

To sum up what everyone here is saying, BFA and BA programs both provide opportunities. and you can major in either SM or Theater Arts. How you want to spend the next 4 years? Do you want nonstop theater or do you like academics too? Are you also interested other aspects of theater like acting, play writing, or design? Keep in mind that some of you will decide that you want to do something else. That is what happened to many students in my daughter’s SM program, who are now doing event management, volunteer coordination, fundraising, and other such non-theater jobs.

There are half a dozen (or so) strong Stage Management BFA Programs available for consideration: Webster, UNCSA, Boston University, Ithaca, De Paul, and CMU. Each offers different flavors of approaching the field. Webster has active partnerships and ongoing Production Assistant opportunities with The Repertory Theatre of St. Louis (LORT), The Opera Theatre of Saint Louis, The Saint Louis Muny Opera and the Shakespeare Festival St. Louis. Check out the programs listed and find out their philosophies concerning internships and international study. There are lots of paths to achieve this goal.
