stage managing?

Hey - I'm a junior at a very competitive high school with a strong theater program (although we're not known for it), and I've been stage managing and working backstage in general there for a year or two now, in addition to assistant stage managing for a professional company. Obviously, I'm not yet sure if that's what I want to do as a career, and I'm not sure I would major in theater in college, but what are schools with well-known theater tech programs? I love to work backstage and want to attend a college with a fantastic theater program that will allow me to learn, get great experience, and have a lot of fun. So basically - what has good theater majors (specifically involving backstage work)? What has good theater productions even if I don't decide to major in theater? Any advice on how to pursue stage managing in college/what would look impressive to future employers?

(In general, my grades/SATs are in the ballpark for a pretty top liberal arts school, although places like HYP/Williams/Amherst are probably reaches. Also, I don't act, so I'm not at all interested in that.)

Hi. I suggest you search the forum for tech theater because there are several threads on the subject, such as:

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/theater-drama-majors/623794-technical-theater.html

It sounds like you may be more interested in good theater programs than a good theater school. This forum is more professionally-oriented (Some high school students have already chosen a career.) but there is a bit of everything.

A couple of LACs that were especially recommended to me were Skidmore and Bard but there are many others.

Great, thanks! Yeah, I just want to do really good theater (and possibly pursue it as a career). That’s a really helpful thread.

DePaul or SUNY Purchase… go read the bios of the faculty.

DePaul and SUNY Purchase are both great for tech theater but they are both theater schools offering professional degrees.
