Schools on the rise.

So which schools do you think are on the rise ?

NMH is definitely becoming more popular.

Yeah, kinda the reason I'm applying there!

Blair Academy is on the rise. Over the last 20 years, the facilities have been refurbished or new facilities have been built. The latest addition is a new athletic and activity center Ever Always: The Campaign for Blair. Another 100 acres were added. The endowment has grown from $2.5 mil 30 years ago to around $65 mil today and still growing with a capital campaign nearing completion that will increase the endowment further. The history is interesting and different from many other preps Ever Always: The Campaign for Blair. See page 25 of the Blair Bulletin "From Hidden Gem to Hot School" http://www1.blair.edu/Downloads/bulletin/BlairBulletinFall08.pdf

Hotchkiss--historically, Hotchkiss has been regarded as 2nd tier to other HEADS/HADES schools, and now it is on the rise.

nope hotchkiss has always been top tier. hotchkiss stands for the H in HADES. if it hasnt always been top tier, it is now

Pink I think you mean on this board...it didn't seem to be talked about a lot in general and then all of a sudden loads of threads on CC about hotchkiss. But its always been pretty up there as in top tier.

Yeah that's what I meant...Hotchkiss's reputation on CC :)

O ok cool , just wondering.

I have been in the Boarding school realm for over 18 years - Hotchkiss has ALWAYS been top tier. Equal to Andover, Exeter, Deerfield, Milton, Groton, Middlesex, and St. Pauls. They are all the top schools in America and have been for years. Concord used to be very well regarded as well - the current president of Harvard is a concord alum.

Perhaps Hotchkiss did not get as much fanboy attention on sites like CC and among teens new to the process but for people in the know Hotchkiss has always been top tier. If you said that to my current boss at Citibank you would be laughed out of the room. He is a Hotchkiss alum and head of the investment division here. Hotchkiss' control of Wall Street is amazing. You can't get away from Hotchkiss on Wall Street if you tried. It is capitalist America. I bet you use Hotchkiss Alums products in your every day life. For instance Revlon the cosmetic company was owned by a prominent Hotchkiss family.

I think the explosion of Hotchkiss on internet forums like CC are due to the following reasons:

They just had the best sports season out of any prep school in history wining four new England titles. I think its safe to say that Hotchkiss is the most athletically able prep school in New England.

Hotchkiss just had the President of Mongolia and a few Ambassadors come in to give talks and the Presidents son will probably be enrolling next year.

Mr.Malcolm McKenzie has started the Hotchkiss plan and brought it the world top education experts (men that advise joe klein !) to develop Hotchkiss 5 year plan. The billionaires have also convened on Hotchkiss in a plan to make it the top of the pack. So that has generated a lot of press.

They're debate team which has been essentially number one for the past 80 years is also getting more press.

Hotchkiss alums like Bill Ford (Chairman of Ford) are appearing on TV a lot more often because of the state of the economy.

Hotchkiss Billionaires are taking unprecedented steps, for instance the trip to Antarctica has generated significant press as its an event unique to Hotchkiss. And it also highlighted the fact that Hotchkiss has produced more billionaires than any other school in the world.

Hotchkiss' Wikipedia page is in the process off being updated and people are actually taking a close look at the alumni page and are realizing just how powerful the schools' alums are. (I.E they are the dominant force on wall street) now that the recession is pulling down some famous investment firms owned at least in part by Hotchkiss families like the Lehman Brothers fiasco people are starting to realize the power that the Hotchkiss alums have).

A very minor reason for press may be that this year a Hotchkiss student scored a perfect 36 on her ACT exam. She was one out of 52 in the nation to do so.

So yes there are numerous events that explain the extra press its been receiving but it has always been a top school since the day it was founded by Mrs. Hotchkiss and bolstered by the President of Yale. So as intended, Hotchkiss has always been a top school as President Dwight of Yale wished it to be.

NMH I have heard a lot about. It seems like its rise has been meteoric. Though Milton has always been top tier it is getting a lot more attention on this thread recently because of the election of Deval Patrick as governor and of course Senator Kennedy's more visible presence during the election season. Both are old Milton Boys. So on sites like CC it has gotten somewhat more press and applications to the school are up but it has ALWAYS been top tier.

I think I missed something, how did andover come to play?

Yeah, this is a good list.

The Duke Steps Down - TIME

"Of all U.S. prep schools, few, if any, can beat the standards Hotchkiss has set" That's straight out of the Time Magazine article above.

ANYWAYS are there any real schools that are one the rise (not schools that have always been top tier but are on the rise on CC but are actually on the rise like from down low to higher up) ?

What about Cushing ? What do you guys know about that school ?

Do you think that St. Andrews can become top tier in a few years (20 or so) time ?

works for CitiBank, fif is a Monkey's Uncle.

yes, but the article was written on Monday, Nov. 01, 1954! things have definitely changed, so i erno man.

There are 3 or 4 posters who all sound like the same Hotchkiss shill on CC. It would be funny if it weren't so nauseating. There must be 50 posts in the last two months about the prominence of Hotchkiss alumni in business etc. and very little mention about the actual quality of the Hotchkiss experience apart from the greasy skid of a student to Wall Street titan. No other boarding school posters (including A/E) on CC make such a concerted effort to define the school by how wealthy and C-level its alumni are (almost all examples used in posts graduated before 1980).

To me, it all seems really shallow and monotone. What about the rest of the Hotchkiss experience? What about kids who have other interests: cultural, public service etc? What sort of values does the school have (hopefully better than most Wall Streeters).

If there's going to be a case made for Hotchkiss' position as a top boarding school, it has to be built on more than its number of billionaires and trips to the Antarctic paid for by Mr. Mars.

Parablane, I agree and the argument will be made in the proper fashion. But it is almost absurd for me to have to make this argument. Its like asking someone to prove Exeter is top tier when its given ...

how is williston northampton and rye country day? any thoughts, are they good schools academically? do most of their kids go off to good colleges? academic reputation, athletics, etc.

thanks for any responses

kafkareborn....not even A/E or day school luminary Roxbury Latin feel the constant need to point out their press or their alumni (of several generations ago) as the reason why their school is top tier. While Hotchkiss may be, and probably is, one of the great U.S. boarding schools, it should not make that claim based on yesterday's laurels. What's helpful to may readers of this site is to gain insight into the experience, diversity, quality, values and kinds of outcomes that Hotchkiss delivers today.

I'd like to see some Hotchkiss posters talk about what makes the School special and distinctive without quoting its press or talking about the accomplishments of its older alumni. You know what they say about people (and institutions) that start believing their own press! A great boarding school is always a work in progress and knows it.
