Schools similar to Rose-Hulman?

Bumping this thread to ask if anyone has an opinion on New Jersey Institute of Technology. I ran a F Aid calculator and it gave a lot of aid and the EFC was really low (comparatively). Can that be legit?

What’s the deal with this school other than I see it’s rather a commuter campus?

If the programs are accredited by ABET then you can get a good engineering education there. The question is whether your student fits in. It is an urban environment but not a small private like Rose-Hulman.

If he’s interested in automotive stuff try Lawrence Technological University in Southfield, MI. Lots of ties to the auto industry and interesting stuff.

I work daily with a couple RH grads and my boss’ boss is RH and the guy is a genius. RH is a very very good school (and this coming from a Purdue graduate :)). WPI is also very good but not known as well outside NE I guess.

I think my son is now leaning towards either computer engineering or electrical engineering (but this could totally change!), so we’re exploring those majors. For we, the parents, we are not wanting him to take on much debt; thus, we are looking at schools that provide generous need-based aid (we qualify for Cal Grant A) and/or merit aid based on his current GPA (3.93 u/w and around 4.45 w) and SAT CR & M (1420). He also just joined a FTC Robotics team (and is totally excited about that) and I’m seeing there are a few scholarships for FTC participants-hard to get, I realize, but worth a shot.

He may chuck it all and want to do music, but he seems very interested in those areas of engineeering at the moment.

xray,

Hard to know where my student would fit in. Rose-Hulman looks great on paper but it’s just not practical at all financially, so I think we need to move on and keep looking. I think he’s got a good list going. I was just hoping someone might have feedback on the financial aspect of NJIT.

Is there merit aid at IIT, xray?

Not X-ray but back in the dark ages when my S applied, I remember that they gave him a generous amount of merit aid. We also liked Rose Hulman but also found that it would not work financially.

IIT, I really liked. Nice urban campus, a train stop right on campus. Seemed a little art-ier than some of the other tech schools. I thought maybe it could have been the architecture program.

IIT has a lot of merit aid, including full-rides for outstanding students.

Architecture students find IIT to be a bit tech-y :D. Very good school.
