hey, I'm from NY and, while I want college to be a new experience, I also want to relate to the general cultural atmosphere of the college. One problem for me would be a school that has a predominently southern culture. I know that theres always going to be kids there from places like New York, but I'd feel more comfortable at a college where most of the kids come from similar "cultures"

It's hard to explain--I definitely don't mean to say I want everyone to be like me and come from a background and town like mine--I just mean that I've heard people from my school talk about schools being "too southern" sometimes.

Anyway, I'm planning on looking at/applying to:

Duke, Wash U, Vanderbilt, UVA, and others...Are any of these schools "too southern." What are some other good schools that might fit that category?

UVA is mostly Virginia kids... but a lot of them are NORTHERN Virginia kids which is a much more comfortable environment for a New York kid... also just be warned that UVA is extremely preppy, popped collars everywhere...

I can understand where you're coming from. I didn't apply to any west coast colleges and only one Northern college.

Duke, Vanderbilt, Emory, etc. are definitely NOT Southern colleges. They are Northern colleges in the South. UVa is a bit more Southern than these, but 1/3 of the student body is OOS, so it's not too bad there either. WUStL is midwestern and entirely different in character. If you want to avoid Southern colleges, avoid the publics and small privates like Rhodes and Sewanee.
