I am a NC resident and have already been accepted to ECU and have applied to UNC Chapel Hill, NC State, and UNC Charlotte. But I becoming increasingly interested in the options available to me Out Of State. Obviously if i get into UNC or even NC State i probably wont worry about it, but I would love to find out some more information about whats out there. Im currently interested in some of the big Southern Public Schools that are offering good OOS Aid and OOS waivers. If anyone has any info or links to schools in the South East that will give in state tuition or even scholarships on top of that please let me know. I know i qualify for a scholarship at LSU that gives me $5000 a year, but is that with the in state or OOS rate? I have a 3.4 Unweighted and a 3.9 weighted with a 28 ACT. So I know i not some amazing student, but my stats are respectable. So any help with this would greatly be appreciated, THANKS!

You would get 15K per year from UAB (university of alabama birmingham) against total costs of 20-24K for oos students… leaves 5-9K

tier 1 research university, urban campus, 11K undergrads. The bigger alabama schools ie alabama and auburn would also have merit aid, not as much for a 28 act as uab and their costs is about 32-36K

Not in the Southeast, but…

University of New Mexico has the Amigo Scholarship for OOS freshmen and transfers who have “23 ACT (1060 SAT) and 3.5 GPA or 26 ACT (1170 SAT) and 3.0 GPA”.

[Undergraduate Scholarships :: | The University of New Mexico](http://scholarships.unm.edu/scholarships/index.html)

The scholarship is worth $11,000/year and makes the OOS tuition equivalent to in-state costs. In state tuition & fees is $6,882/year. Room & board is $8086/year.

Amigo also includes an additional $500 for your transportation costs.

State flagship U and a major research university with adjacent medical and law schools. 22,000 undergraduates. Urban campus but only 20 minutes from a ski area and other outdoor activities.

any more schools out there? Please help me out!

WayOutWestMom–Do you know if the Amigo Scholarship is “forgiving” with regard to GPA/SAT? My D has a 3.9 GPA with 22 ACT (We know ACT is low but she has ADHD issues)…do they do some sort of sliding scale?

Sockermom—

No forgiveness or sliding scale that I’ve heard of. But you could always contact the Scholarship Office and ask. Phone: 505-277-8900 or 1-800-CALLUNM.

I want to hear about some more school!!!

There just aren’t that many. Public universities are in the business of educating their in-state students. Out of state students that pay more are icing on the cake financially. Find some schools you are interested in and check the websites under financial aid or scholarships. Quite a few publics have auto scholarships based on GPA and test scores that will reduce the OSS tuition costs. They will have alittle chart or a calculator and you plug in the ACT (or SAT) score and the GPA and it spits out the scholarship amount of you can find it on the chart. It’s generally pretty cut and dried. New Mexico and Alabama are often quoted on this thread because they do have pretty good programs for out of state students. The new college cost calculators are starting to appear on the websites also which can be helpful.

It’s also relative to your budget and what your in-state rates are. Some states are expensive even for in-state and others not so much. Also fewer and fewer states have “state scholarships” that are transportable…meaning if you don’t use them in-state you lose them so look at the entire picture for your college funding.

You’ve narrowed your region to Big Southern schools…so a few hours spent surfing the college websites should yield your answer.
