Looking for any college ideas I may have skipped. My D#2 is entering her Senior year. She has a 3.4 cum gpa and will have taken 4 AP'S and 2 Honors courses, as well as 2 foreign languages for4 years. She does not test well, and we are hoping she will improve her ACT score from 25 in the fall. She has shown great leadership in school, being secretary of class for 3 years and will be secretary of school this fall, President of Congress, President of Diversity Club, Team Captain in fall for Varsity Sport, on many committes, etc. Well respected both in and out of the classroom. She will most likely want to be on the east coast for school, and is unsure about major, perhaps sociology. Any ideas for LACS that pay more attention to the person, rather than socres? Any thoughts appreciated.

I forgot to add that so far she likes Hobart, Union, and UVM (I know, not a LAC, but you gotta love Burlington).

It's not a LAC in the American sense of the word, but you might want to look at the University of Chicago if she's up for the academic rigor.

Susquehanna, Allegheny, or Roanoke if she is up for more rural. How about Goucher, Lynchburg, Quinnipiac, Marist, Clark, and even Northeastern (larger, but has small classes)? If you want to have some state schools in the mix too, in addition to UVM, you might check out Towson (very close to Goucher), UMBC, James Madison, perhaps one of the smaller Sunys. American is also a very good suggestion. You might even look into Suffolk U. as a safety. It is in a nice section of Boston.

Editing to add Sacred Heart, Fairfield U., St. Joseph's, Le Moyne, and La Salle to the list of possibilities. Oh, and U of Scranton might be another school to check out. Some of these schools have various religious affiliations.

Here's a list of SAT-optional colleges that might be helpful: http://www.fairtest.org/optinit.htm

Schools that look at the whole student (and care about good fit):

Bates
Bennington
Bard
Drew
Guilford
Hampshire

Agree with Northstarmom. Some people just don't test all that well, and luckily some schools get this.

If she likes Hobart & Union she might like Skidmore.

Thank you for all of your responses. D#2 is not very "artsy", so we have decided against Skidmore. And she is more on the preppy side, so Bennington, Bard, Guilford and Hampshire are out. American we are planning to see. Anyone know if Trinity College or Lafayette pay attention to the "whole package?" They are on our reach list. Also thanks for Bates suggestion, we are considering that as well.

University of Richmond may be a good choice for her....

Try Gettysburg (my alma mater, and Soc was my major!) They'd weight her GPA more heavily than her scores (my D has the same problem as yours...her SAT scores don't really have any correlation to her GPA...)

I did not think Skidmore seemed particularly artsy... Many normal preppy kids. Very nice kids, too. If you have not looked, might be worth a peek.

Trinity is a good call. Have you checked into Hamilton?

Thank you, thank you! We actually do have UofRichmond on the list, but D#2 is a little nervous because more than a few kids from our town go there, and aren't that thrilled, but can't seem to explain why. We are going to Lafayette and Muhlenberg this week, didn't put Gettysburg on list. Is it very conservative? I will reconsider Skidmore, as well. We did visit Hamilton but she didn't love it, although may try there again. That school seems really difficult to get in to... are they known to look at "the whole person?" Thanks so much

"...didn't put Gettysburg on list. Is it very conservative?"

No, G-burg is not very conservative (but I've known lots of conservative types who were very happy there), seems to always have all types of kids...I've made two trips there with my D in the last year, she is planning a solo trip for Legacy Weekend in the Fall, when she'll have her interview. PM me with any questions you have!

SpringfieldMom- I just went on G-burg's website. It actually looks very interesting, and may try to get there tomorrow. Question to you is.... jewish popultaion? I went on Hillel site and says only 60 out of 2,900 kids. Can't find much info on G's site either. Would love a school that has about 8% -10% jewish population. Thanks for your input

Oldhag, ave. sat scores at Gettysburg are in the 600's, which is why I did not mention the school. Also, it is not in the most happening location, but neither are many LACs.

Sorry, oldhag (and I don't like calling you that!)...I don't know much about the Jewish population at G-burg now...I graduated 25+ years ago, and only knew about 10 Jewish kids in my class back then...even your child's ACT score and GPA, I think it's still worth looking into...let us know how it turns out!

SFMom ~ Thanks so much. I think wer WILL visit Gettysburg, but will go in August, instead of cramming it into our trip to Lehigh Valley schools this week. I promise to report back, and appreciate all your input.

Northeastmom ~ I know D#2's stats aren't great, but some schools that DO require SATS/ACTS will be kind during ED cycle, and if we find a fit a little out of her reach, she might give it a shot, hoping they will look at her non-academic side. Thanks for you posts!

Absolutely true. I think that it is a reasonable reach.

I think you will like Muhlenberg. They are SAT optional which by definition means they look at things other than standardized testing. Also seemed like a very friendly place, but that is the problem with visiting when school is out - you may not experience the same thing. I think Lafayette is quite a bit more selective. As long as you are in the area stop by and check out Moravian. Another very nice small school.

I agree, it is close to impossible to get a sense of a school without the student body there. We are going to do the best we can, and any schools that seem somewhat appealing, we will go back to in fall, when she will interview. The ticket so far has been to meet for coffee/lunch with friends who attend the various colleges. They seem to offer first hand experience, and can share the weekend/nightlife side of things. We didn't do that at Hamilton, and it didn't seem that appealing to D. Do you think that school looks at the whole applicant?

NJres ~ We know a few kids at Muhlenberg who love it. I know nothing about Moravian, so will go on their website now.
