Schools that really like Extra curriculars, Course rigor, and Awards

I don’t think you have the stats to get into Michigan, honestly. And trust me, the unemployment rate among business majors (and MBAs, although I would debate the value of the MBA - and I also have one of those) is MUCH lower than most other majors. Sure, there are people with low GPAs who didn’t do internships, don’t network for jobs, don’t take the advice of their college career office on stuff like resumes & interview skills & attire, those folks are struggling. But if you have a good GPA and don’t make those mistakes, you will do fine.

There is a whole area of business in the non-profit sector, too. Non-profits need accounting, finance, marketing, operations, IT, etc. You could certainly combine those two interests, and focus in on classes that would help you with non-profit management. There are tons of people in the non-profit world with good hearts, but NO business skills to make their non-profits grow and succeed.

There are also a lot of business opportunities in the medical fields. Hospitals needs administrators, people to run their billing departments, people to analyze market share, marketing, etc. And who do you think sells hospitals all that equipment and all those supplies? Businesses. There is a whole world of business jobs & opportunities that you probably aren’t aware of. Honestly, more people work in “business” jobs than just about any other sector in the US. So many people major in something else, but end up working in business anyway because that is where the jobs are. You might as well prepare for it, and have a leg up on all of them coming out of school if you love it anyway.

Being a dentist is no guarantee of success these days! I know several struggling solo practitioner dentists.

What is defined as a “good” school? Would University of Virginia and Virginia Tech be “good” schools by their definition?

Plan to retake the SAT, maybe the ACT, get those grades up. And be sure you are looking at which teachers will write your recs, building relations with them and your GC, now. UVA is tough for anyone to predict because they balance admits across the state and have such super hs in NVa. Get a Fiske Guide or Princeton Review. Look at freshman profiles on college websites to see if you fall in line with the top 25%. And remember, any Common App school agrees to be holistic. Any tough, highly competitive hs will have others applying to many of your top choices, some who rank above you.

Adcoms will see the transcript, see the Bs (or worse) and see what classes they are in- a heavy AP load can be an issue when those are your Bs- or you get B’s in classes that relate to your major. Use the power you have to ramp things up, look at a variety of colleges- and the eternal wisdom: Love Thy Safeties.
Best wishes.

I will plan to retake the SAT of course. Haven’t taken the ACT. How exactly do I build a relationship with my GC tho? Like do I just come into her office and talk about college every week?

In my AP classes, I’m getting B pluses and A minuses

UVA good. Vtech not that good. Its alright to them
Schools like Tufts, Gtown, UMich (which I was a bit surprised about). Okay, thats not rally helpful, but schools that are better than average. I know that doesn’t help much, sorry :/

In my area, dentists are doing extremely well. I actually don’t particularly love medicene. I love business management, research, business operations etc
I only started a nonprofit because I was concerned about the issue (lacking quality of education). Other than that, I dont have a huge intrest in working in other nonprofits when I am older.

What can I do to improve my stats for UMich?

A few thoughts:

 • Are your parents REALLY willing to pay OOS tuition or private college tuition? You need to run some Net Price Calculators with them at the various college websites to be certain. A lot of parents say that, but when it comes to plunking down between $200,000 and $250,000 total for the education, they are actually not able or willing to do so.
 • I am confused about your stats. You say they are “end of junior year”. Are you projecting your GPA (so assuming a good semester to bring things up)? Or are you already a senior (in which case, many application deadlines have already passed)?
 • Assuming your GPA assessment is for what it will be at the end of your junior year, your GPA is pretty much what it is. A 3.55 unweighted is very low for Michigan, especially out of state. Unless you have some other “hook” you have not mentioned (under represented minority, for example). One of my kids applied with a 3.65 uw and 2100 SATs a couple of years ago, and she was a double legacy (both parents, and actually would have been a fourth generation Wolverine) as well. I would say her ECs were comparable to yours, and very good recommendations. She got a courtesy waitlist. And with your stats, I would say you have zero chance of pre-admissions to the Ross School of Business at Michigan (Ross does not start your freshman year – you spend some time elsewhere at the University – some students know they are into Ross before they start freshman year, while others apply once they have attended for a couple of semesters).
• I also think Georgetown is probably out of reach with your GPA.
 • Your best bet to improve your chances of admissions at various schools is (1) get the best grades you are capable of this semester and next fall of senior year, and (2) study for and improve your SAT scores. Try to get it up to a 2100.

Keely, yes, go to your GC and ask some of the same questions you’ve asked here. Your GC will know what schools are particularly keen on your school’s graduates. I know that there is varying quality and GC’s are mostly overworked, but if you go in with some open-ended questions I bet you can get some good information.

Good luck!

That gpa is my prospected gpa overall for high school. I thought starting a fairly successful nonprofit would be my hook.
My friends in other school districts have 3.8s uw, but they get as many Bs as me. Our school district weights grades weirdly.
Honors :.5 AP:1
Grading scale is also diffrent.

Weighted grades are irrelevant in the admissions process anyway. Only your unweighted GPA matters.

You mentioned Dickinson above. One of my kids went there. They do not have a business major (they have something in international business, but I would generally not consider them a strong business school).

Starting the non-profit is not a hook. It is an interesting extra curricular. If it is REALLY significant in its impact, it could be more significant in your admissions process, but it has to be really a strong impact for that to happen. It is hard to make up for a low GPA at top schools. They really need to know that you can do the classroom work first of all.

Lots of kids start non-profits. Lots. The college’s #1 concern is how you will fit there and do academically, whether you really should take the place of some other kid. You can show drive, compassion, follow-through with your NP. Same for the “internships” (assuming they weren’t all gotten through connections or some fee based program, and you actually did something there.) But it’s not a magic key.

You need to get the Fiske or PR this week. If you are a mid-year junior, you need some solid info, fast. Not assuming or hoping.

Agree with the recommendation to get a copy of Fiske and start to do your own solid research. Your posts seem really scattered, and you are relying on rumors/anectodotes to pick a major.

Id say I show a lot of drive with the NP. I’ve been in the newspaper a couple of times for it, received awards/grants for it, and the largest childrens literacy NP (RIF) bl

Is blogging about us next month. I’ve collected over 1000 books through book drives, created educational videos to teach kids math and English, made audio recordings of books, and sent educational packets to poor schools/shelters. We are forming partnerships with some huge organizations. And we are in the process of buying tablets and mp3 players, which contaib the recordings and videos, which we are sending to poor schools/shelters.
Unlike most kids in my area, I did all my extra curriculars by myself (internships, nonprofit, etc)
Internships are really good and I get paid. Smithsonian institute, romneys political campaign, national building museum, and more)

…woah. I do like business, personally. Is it so wrong to want to base my major on something that will be practical and lucrative. My internships have also helped me realize what careers I’d want to go into. Don’t assume so much man

And Our grading scale is diffrent. Grading scales are diffrent for diffrent school districts. In my old school district, if I attended high school there, a 98-100 would be a 4.3 (unweighted)

Lots of kids are in the newspapers. That’s about local interest. RIF is good to recognize you, encourage you. Businesses are good to partner with you.

But, you’re asking about college interest in you. And, you haven’t mentioned whether you actually work with these needy kids or basically work at a distance. Whether yours is the only idea of it’s kind (it’s not, from what you’ve mentioned) or somehow superior in its reach. Your context, your sense of what you have done, is limited to the kids you know, maybe what’s being done in your community. Some feedback from some adults. Adcoms will see kids from across the country.

Sorry for our being blunt. But you don’t have this wider perspective yet. They can look at an app from a kid who did all sorts of nice things and say, too bad about the grades. You need to find a college that will love you, as you are, will think 3.5 and lots of APs is just their cup of tea, just the sort of academic competitiveness they know works at their schools. Not hope the icing will do the trick at a school that routinely cherry picks higher gpa and test scores.

Don’t worry about grading differences. The GC will report your results out of th scale used at your hs.

We send books internationally. We send these tablets/MP3 players internationally. Its not like its just my local community.

What are some colleges that would like my stats then?

This is what I already said on post #12 about how to find schools that have what you want and might accept a student with your stats.
You need to be willing to do a little work on your own rather than relying on random college suggestions from random strangers on the internet ;-)

Yeah because I’ve done no research on my own. Thanks for that assumption.
