My D went to their senior showcase for BFA acting and MT yesterday. She said there were only 11 kids in the MT senior class! So they lost 5 more after the sophomore cuts. But, she did say that the MT kids were really, really good. She was very impressed.

I contributed to this thread over a year ago and wanted to provide an update about Emerson that I just got confirmation of from an admissions contact at Emerson.

Emerson no longer has mandatory cut system. Starting with this year’s applying class their plan is to enroll 18 first-year students in BFA Acting and 18 first-year students in BFA Musical Theatre. And, starting with that class, they will replace the Junior year Departmental requirement of a 16 student maximum in those programs and the “re-audition” process with a probationary system based on grades, juries, and conduct.

Both of these programs are still intensive, rigorous programs with high expectations but they do not need to reach a 16 student maximum for Junior and Senior year.

I used to live in Boston and am a big fan of Emerson so I wanted to bring this change to the forum’s attention.

Thanks for the update! D has friends starting this fall in both Acting and MT programs at Emerson, and I wondered in the back of my mind if they were going to be arbitrarily cut at some time.

That is good news and it will make the program a lot more attractive to applicants.
