Schools which recieve little attention but are of good to very good quality

Yeshiva University

These are not all in the same tier of competitiveness, but nevertheless good quality schools for different abilities and different majors and less talked about:
Colby, Hope, Providence, Franklin and Marshall, Drew, Susquehanna, Clark

Also, Muhlenberg, Union

Schools that surprised me in my daughter's search were : Randolph Macon, Nazareth, & Towson U. ....I still think James Madison is the best school she applied to but I would be happy with her attending any of the other 3.

Other excellent colleges not mentioned so far (and off the beaten trail) are several in the South: Birmingham-Southern College; Milsaps (Jackson, Mississippi), Centenary College of Louisiana (Shreveport, good merit aid); and Berry College in Georgia. A couple Iowa colleges not mentioned so far are Cornell College and Coe College. All offer a close-knit liberal arts college environment with interested, involved faculty.

A couple me-too'ers for University of Tulsa (TU) and Kalamazoo College (Michigan).

A lot of Americans, when thinking of British schools, only seem to think that two good schools exists: Oxbridge.

There is also LSE, certainly a fine institution in its own right.

I think that UCSD does not get nearly enough respect. Oh, and add on Rochester.

Texas Tech (for its Honors College (HC) - one of only four in the country with faculty whose appointments are only in the HC and one of very few with degrees (general liberal arts and Natural History & Humanities) offered exclusively by the HC).

See the thread in the Parents Forum on state honors colleges. Many are terrific in various regions of the country. A few to note in the South - University of Mississippi (see some of the posters high praise); University of Arkansas (an up-and-comer with millions in Walton (i.e. Wal-Mart) money to spend); University of Oklahoma; University of Georgia; and numerous others.

csdad, I agree with you about your list. I especially want to add that for public schools, James Madison and Towson both seem excellent.

SOUS: Are you applying to Willamette? We've recently sort of discovered it and because they have a strong Japanese program (with a sister Tokyo University right on campus), it is really looking like a spot my D (a Jr right now) is interest in pursuing. If you are applying, may I ask about your GPA, EC's, etc.? Thanks...

Adelphi University is rising up

thanks foglikely!

calmac - what timing! apparently one of the Willamette admitted students get togethers will take place in Newport Beach!

Foglikely - You did us all a favor with your recapping the colleges/universities into distinct lists from this thread. Thanks a bunch!

I'd like to add Allegheny College in Pennsylvania to the list. I've heard good things about it. Good for science...nice facility. High rate of placement in med schools. Nice campus. Affiliated with Methodist Church but all denominations welcome. Heard that faculty seem to care personally about students. Mentioned in the book "Colleges That Change Lives".

Tufts University, where I will be attending this fall, hehe. Yes, it might be 27th in the country, but hardly anyone knows about it, and it has the best IR undergrad arguably in the country.

Smith and Mount Holyoke are very good for gals.

dont forget colorado college or washington & lee (va) for private =)
