What are some schools with strong art history programs?
Williams, Harvard, Michigan, Stanford, Chicago, Princeton, Yale… many others. What do you want to do with an Art History degree?
My daughter just finished her Freshman year at Pitt in Art History. Pitt is great because you have several world class museums in Pittsburgh. Carnegie Mellon, Andy Warhol, Mattress Factory and several others. She loves Pitt.
If you want to teach or be a curator, you will likely need to get a PhD, so watch your cost for undergrad and don’t get too much in debt.
My daughter looked at Michigan, Fordham, Pitt, Kentucky and Ole Miss due to a combination of cost and decent programs. One curator we talked with said to just get an excellent liberal arts degree in undergrad and focus on Art History in grad school. However, looking at PhD candidates, you would need to get a Masters in Art History to get into top PhD programs if you don’t focus on Art History in undergrad.
Two other quick points when you get in - study your languages. My daughter took German in HS and is studying French in college. Work on getting internships/volunteer positions in museums (if that is your goal). The job market is really tough to get a job in museum work.
Happy to answer any other questions. I’m not an expert, but have done a lot of research in the last couple of years.
