schools you wished your kid liked better

We have no regrets with my S, he just loves Pomona and feels if he could go to any school in the country he would still choose Pomona. I am hoping my D feels the same way after a year at USD. She is so excited right now that I think she will make it work for her.

The Claremonts are fine schools, but we already live in SoCal, and I just couldn't get all that jazzed about sending her to expensive schools that few have ever heard of and that are located in a hotter, smoggier part of town. Plus, in addition to the dreary architecture at Mudd, the one Mudd alumnus I knew was a geek with a capital G. Pomona, on the other hand, has fine architecture - and excellent food.

My parents don't really care where I go as long as I'm happy.

My dad does remind me to keep an open mind about UConn since I'm already accepted, but he also encourages me to keep looking elsewhere since he knows I can do even better. I like the school and would be content going there if necessary, but it's just not for me, I don't think.

Mom wouldn't object to me going to Trinity since it's about two feet away, give or take a few miles, but at the same time, she's fine with my other picks.

Neither have them have edited my list in any way, nor have they tried to add any schools to it that they know I'm not interested in. They trust me to know myself better than anyone and do the proper research without hand-holding, and I appreciate that. Not everyone can do that, however. A lot of my friends would have been lost without guidance from Mom and Dad. As long as parents don't force schools on their children, I see no harm in using parental influence to guide the munchkins along. :)

Coureur, you'll be amused to know that when my parents saw Harvard, they were most unimpressed by its architecture. "It's so famous, I was expecting it to be better looking," my mother said.

I thought my D would be a great fit at Wellesley, but her "no girls school" edict is inflexible. Other than that, New College is a great school an hour from home and would be a $200K savings from most of the other schools she's applying to, but not really her style.
