I've banked a lot of time into science fair over the years (I'm a junior now!), often getting to state levels, and this year to Nationals. I do love participating and it shows, but does anyone know/have an idea of how Stanford views this? Does it carry much weight, if any?

Thanks!

(Oh and on a side note, I'm not trying to say that I'm riding my Science Fair achievements alone, I was just wondering how they look as EC's, if that's what you'd put them under.)

Yes, Stanford very much likes to see engagement in science fairs and other similar endeavors (if that’s your thing; for students in other areas, such as music, the equivalent would be music competitions). If you really want to impress Stanford admissions, try to go for the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) or Science Talent Search (STS). Students who make it to these routinely get into Stanford, Harvard, MIT, etc. Some say that placing at ISEF is a near guarantee into any university you want.

Thanks for the quick reply!
I’m actually on alternate for International ISEF at the moment. I was kinda stunned considering my project is actually in its 1st of 2 years… so it wasn’t even done yet. I’m expecting it’ll go the farthest next year, but we’ll have to see.

That’s great, and bodes well for your chances if the rest of your application is in order. I’m not sure how much adcoms view alternate at ISEF differently, if they do at all (it might be equally impressive to them). You should search the results threads for “alternate ISEF” to see how students who were ISEF alternates fared in admissions. I have a feeling they did well.
