Science Olympiad????

i know that there is something called science olympiad...and i want to join it...however, how can i join it? in school? outside the school????

This is a school activity. Here is the national site: <a href="http://www.soinc.org/%5B/url%5D">http://www.soinc.org/</a>.
There is a lot of information on their site so look around. Here's info on organizing a team: <a href="http://www.soinc.org/aboutso/organize.htm%5B/url%5D">http://www.soinc.org/aboutso/organize.htm</a>.
You can find the teams in your state here: <a href="http://www.soinc.org/contact/links.htm%5B/url%5D">http://www.soinc.org/contact/links.htm</a>.

Contact one of your science teachers about starting a team. A coach at a nearby school may be willing to help you get started. It's a lot of fun (both of my sons participated) and I encourage you to do what you can to organize a team at your school.

very fun especially if u have a group of people interested!

Yeah, I agree. It's really really fun. Especially if you put in effort!

Yes, typically it is a school activity. It's fun and educational since it's an actual team. However, don't do it just for the resume.. Unless you really really need an EC and there's nothing else. Talk to your school's admistrators to find out if it exists.

ya and if you do well it looks really good. state champ in fermi and ecology :)

how hard is it? and do u need a lot of background knowledge?

I think to do well you need a fair amount of background knowledge, however, I wouldn't study for it (maybe just skim over a few things relating to your topic a few days before). Some of the questions they ask can be extremely random, so you do better to be a quick thinker and take educated guesses.

The good thing about Science Olympiad is that you are assigned very specific topics, so it's not like a random quiz bowl where questions can be about anything. I did it last year in middle school and everyone started studying in December for a tournament at the end of January. You don't actually need to know anything about your topic before you start, but you will need to study. It was a lot of fun and we came in 3rd place in the state, but it's too bad that there's no team in the high school :<

Science Olympiad is a lot of fun. My team isn't very competative but I convinced some friends to join and we had a lot of fun. To my shock, I won two medals and my teammates tried to convince me to jingle them at our rival school. Loads of fun.

you join it in school. not all schools have it though. if your school doesn;t have it, you should start the group!

my school has it. actually, the school just formed a team and went to state competition and placed 7th out of 14 teams. not too bad b/c the team did not have any preparation and was formed at last-minute. not only that, most team members were freshman or sophomore and didn't take that much sci classes as i did. i didn't go to the competition b/c it conflicted with my stuff. so i guess i'll join it in sept.
but it is still helpful to study and prepare for it?
