My daughter has a 4.2 gpa. She took honors chemistry and biology her freshman and sophomore year. She also had 2 years of Spanish and 1 year of German. Next year she can either take another science or foreign language class but not both. Would it be worse for college admissions to only have 2 years of the same language( she had a 3td year but it was German) Or to only have 2 years of a science class?
It would be a good idea to choose courses so that, by high school graduation, she will complete:
a. Physics (since she already has biology and chemistry).
b. Level 3 (preferably 4 for the most selective colleges) of a foreign language.
(Of course, not skimping on other subjects like English, math, history / social studies, art / music.)
Schools that require three years of foreign language mean three years of the same language. So, she really only has two years of foreign language for college admissions purposes.
Go read the admissions requirements for your state university systems carefully. Most kids need to be able to get into at least one state school as an admissions or financial safety.
Ours would allow 2 years of foreign language in the minimum admissions requirements, but three years of science is required.
Also double-check your high school graduation requirements just in case.
I would do a 3rd year of language
is there any possibility for you to take one of these online or over the summer?
For admission purpose, since the highest level she reached is level 2, she wouldn’t be competitive for very selective universities and even where 2 is the minimum, she’d be less competitive since most students will have more.
As for science, she’d need biology, chemistry, physics at any level (and, preferably, a 4th class if she’s aiming for selective colleges such as a state flagship).
So… she’d need both.
Since she can’t fit both in her schedule, she’ll need to find a way - hence: online (there are public virtual schools) or during summer school.
It depends on the colleges she is looking at. I agree with @MYOS1634 that most colleges like Physics and 3 foreign language. If less selective, you may not need both. You can google the schools and see what they recommend, or use college data and look up the school under the admission tab. It will show you what is recommended. (You may want to confirm on the college data set for each school.)
What else is she taking that she doesn’t have room for a foreign language and science?
My D took 4 th year of foreign language, math, English, science and social studies in senior year and was done by 1 pm. She played a sport in first semester and worked part time in the afternoon in second semester.
Look at the recommended/required courses of colleges she is considering applying to. Most competitive colleges want 3-4 years of the same foreign language and at least chem, bio, and physics. Unless she is in some specialized school, I’m not sure why she can’t fit that in her schedule.
