Sciences at Lafayette?

Hello :)

I'm having a hard time choosing between attending Lafayette and Franklin & Marshall. I'm afraid I don't know much about the science department (biology) at Lafayette because I have not visited yet, and I was wondering if anyone had any information that could help me.

For example, which buildings are the science buildings? (The map is not very specific...) How recently were they built and what was the approximate budget? About how much money does the school give in research grants (if applicable)? How involved can undergrads become in research? What is the acceptance rate to med school?

Also, does anyone know how many foreign languages and study abroad options Lafayette offers?

Any other information that anyone can offer about their personal experiences at Lafayette or why they chose the school would be wonderful! Thanks so much!

Kunkel Hall is the biology building at Lafayette - if you’re looking at a map, it’s next to Hugel and across the street from Skillman Library. (Building 7 on the campus map on the website)

I have to be honest. Kunkel is somewhat dated. In Lafayette’s Master Plan for the campus (from 2009) Phase 3 lists building a new Life Sciences building next to (attached to?) Kunkel, and phase 4 lists the demolishing of Kunkel. I don’t know when they are supposed to get to phase 3, though.

I do know that the science labs and facilites in the Oeschle Hall (Neuropsychology) are new and excellent, as are the facilities in the Hugel Science Center (next door to Kunkel).

Undergrads have very good opportunities to be involved in research, because there are no graduate students at Lafayette. Every year students participate in research, go to conferences to present their findings, and have their names published when assisting faculty on research.

Study abroad is fairly popular. Lafayette has its own programs in Bremen (Germany) and Madrid, I believe those are mostly aimed at the engineers. However, they also have a very large number of other programs that they have agreements with. My son went to Barcelona for a semester through IES, and had a fantastic experience. All of his credits (and grades) transferred back to Lafayette with no problems. Lafayette offers short-term interim study abroad courses lead by Laf faculty in January, and this summer they are offering a first-of-its-kind program that will travel to China, South Korea AND North Korea.

The acceptance rate to Med school is very high. (Note that you do not need to be a biology major to apply to med school - you just need to take certain courses, most of which I think are chemistry courses)

For foreign languages, Lafayette offers programs in Chinese, French, German, Greek, Hebrew, Japanese, Latin, Russian and Spanish.

Good luck with your decision!

do you know anything about computer science at Lafayette?

thanx

I don’t have any experience with that program, sorry. But here’s their webpage:

Thank you very much for your help! This is the first time I’m hearing about the plans to demolish Kunkel Hall, and I’m glad someone took the time to point this out to me. Now I know the right questions to ask when I visit this week. :)
