sorry if this may be a dumb question but I just wanted to make sure!

when it says math 155A/B, does that mean “A” refers to a first semester and “B” refers to a second semester?

yes, that is correct

Hi, thanks so much for all this information as it was really really helpful! I’ve tried asking Vanderbilt pre-med/science questions to others and got little in the way of an answer.

Anyway, I see you recommend taking BSCI 110a/111a, CHEM 102a/104a/106a, and MATH 155a plus the FYWS. That’s good news since that’s what my schedule is looking like for next year. Before I call my counselor this week, I was wondering if you could clear some stuff up for me?

Some of my classes are within 10 minutes of each other and in different buildings, is this going to be a big problem? (It took me AGES to work out a combination that worked with my chosen FYWS and that’s the only thing I came up with!) Will my social life suffer really badly if I take a 5:10-8:00 PM class one day a week? Any other information/recommendations/warnings about professors or classes would be welcome! Thanks =)

BSCI 110a MWF 12:10-1:00 Graham/Patton
BSCI 111a F 1:10-4:00 Baskauf, S.
CHEM 102a TR 8:10-9:25 Lukehart, C.
CHEM 104a M 5:10-8:00 Phillips, S.
CHEM 106a W 4:10-5:00 Tellinghuisen, J.
MATH 155a MWF 9:10-10:00 R 12:10-1:00 Zhong, Q.
MUSL 115f TR 1:10-2:25 Barz, G.

The only class conflict I see is from math 155 recitation (thursday) to your MUSL. where is that class located? If it’s on Blair, it might be a problem, however since Thursday is recitation, you can usually leave a few minutes early depending on your TA. Other than that, it is very possible to go from Wilson to MRBIII (excluding blair, these are the furthest apart on campus), in 10 minutes.

Don’t worry about your social life and a 5-8 class, everyone has them.
Good luck!

(For future reference, I find it easier when my classes are in blocks, and less spread out. You’ll be annoyed with 1-2 hours inbetween classses.)

The location of the FYWS is TBA, if it is on Blair (which I’m going to go ahead and say it is, since the other FYWS in MUSL is, and it’s a fair assumption to say a MUSL course would be on Blair, no?) and I had a bike would it be do-able?

Yeah, that shouldn’t be a problem.

PFL. thanks for all the help!

so i am a little confused. the rate my professor says that the two best teachers (based on their reviews) are zheng and aldroubi. GCN2, you said both those teachers were ones to avoid? does anyone else have comments about teachers for math 175? thanks guys, you are all so much help!

My opinions are just that, of one person. If RMP says otherwise I’d listen to them, that is atleast a compendium of MANY opinions. Hopefully someone else will have insight.

@GCN2 Hi there, I was admitted by Vandy and Umich as a sophomore transfer student majoring in physics and I am having a hard time making the decision, could you help me out?

These two guys, both are top schools, both have high reputation and both can get me an amazing undergraduate experience. As for the physics program, Umich seems has a better ranking, but ranking can’t show the whole picture, because Umich is just too big and has too many students, which worries me that I can’t get enough resources and opportunities of doing research.

I am a fan of Vandy because its fantastic setting of small classes is too attractive to turn down, but I have no idea how good its physics program for undergraduates is, how good the professors are or how many research opportunities I can get as an undergraduate, perhaps the research opportunity matters most as I plan to pursue a PhD after graduation and that will helps a lot.

So, if you were me, which one would you choose?
