Topic: Existentialist Jean Paul Sartre believed in personal freedom, holding that man is free to "write the script" for his own life: He can blame no one else if his life is a "poor performance". On the other hand, William Blake and others in the Romantic movement felt that the expectations and restraints of society severely limit a person. They believed that schooling, organized religion and other social institutions imprison a person's mind and spirit.

Assignment: What is your opinion of the claim that there is no such thing as free choice, that to some degree we are always bound by the rules of society?

Man is born free. But everywhere he is in chains. is a very famous quote. However to what extent is this true? Yes, it is true that we are bound by social laws and rules but at the end of the day everyone has free will and has the freedom to make their own decisions. I agree with Jean Paul Sartre, everyone is accountable for what they do and society may have an influence over ones life but the real decisions are always made by an individual himself. And this is really how it should be as no one should be held responsible for the deeds or decisions made by somebody else. With such freedom it is not always true that man will make the right decisions but it is true that we have complete power over what we choose to do, no matter what society says or thinks.

However sometimes making our own decisions without caring for society helps us choose what is truly right. A very good example of this would be from the life of Steve Jobs, the late CEO of Apple. Steve Jobs lived a hard life growing up; he was born out of wedlock and was adopted by a couple who did not complete college. When it was time for Steve to begin college, after about 6 months of college, he realized that he was using up almost all of his parents money to continue his studies. After much thought he decided to discontinue his education and he dropped of his college course. He then got into only the classes that he decided were interesting and what he wanted to learn, instead of the classes that he was previously obliged to take during his college course. The decision was not an easy one and at the time was most probably frowned upon by most members of society. Steve even had to face many consequences due to his decision, he had to sleep on the floors of the dorms of friends, save up money from recycling cans for lunch, etc. It was a hard decision to make but he followed what he believed in rather than thinking about what others thought and he didnt let the thoughts of others stop him. After years of dropping out he once said that it was one of the best decisions he had ever made. Due to dropping out he got to join many classes that he enjoyed and found interesting such as calligraphy which later helped him to create one of Apples keystroke designs which was very important.

Although Steve Jobs made the right decision without considering the thoughts of society, we cannot always say the same about others. Another example of how we all have the freedom to make our own decisions, whether they be right or wrong, can be traced back to the very beginning of time with Adam and Eve. Adam and Eve were the first humans to ever be created and they were dwellers of heaven. God had told them that they were allowed to stay in heaven and enjoy its wonders; however they were strictly forbidden to go to a certain tree and eat of its fruit. It was the forbidden fruit. However even after the restrictions placed by God himself upon Adam and Eve they made the decision to eat the forbidden fruit and were punished and sent down to the Earth. As we can see that this shows that man, even from the beginning of time, has been accountable for making his own decisions.

All in all, we all were given freedom to do what we think is right. When we make decisions they may not always be the best choices however the choices are ours and even though society may sometimes play a role, at the end of the day we choose what we want to do; because it is our decisions that make us who we are.

Thanks in advance :)
